PHPWhere is this coming from – is it a WordPress standard? Because this goes against what the larger PHP community recommends as best practice, especially with the PSR standards ( https://github.com/php-fig/fig-standards/blob/master/accepted/PSR-2-coding-style-guide.md ). The problem with tabs is that different software programs and environments interpret them differently (as either 3 or 4 spaces), so it makes things harder if you are a version control for your code. Spaces are easier to work with as most code editors have an option to automatically turn tabs to spaces for you.
4. Tabs must be used for indentation—not spaces.
As far as I can remember, only WordPress as a big contributor uses tabs.
I have learnt that optimal php code should not be longer than 80 characters per line. With tabs, this is very hard to achieve. I use 2 spaces per indent.
The other thing I am afraid of is having to rewrite all our past themes. This will lead to a massive clean up of the theme directory here on themeforest. It is just not justifiable to redo 2 year old themes that sell 2 – 5 times a month. They are all compatible to free wordpress plugins and the current version of wp – I think that should be enough.
Furthermore… Themes like our Event Guest List theme have a very specific set of functionality that can never be found in other themes. Almost all the functionality in this theme is theme-unique and is not used in other themes – it is a theme, customized for the best user experience in this very specific use case. I just can’t find any reason whatsoever why I should “pluginize” this one.
By the way, we already have a framework that is based on bundles (modules) that share code over most of our themes. While it would technically not be very hard to update the themes to share the same plugins, it is, as Kriesi mentioned, a huge step backwards in user experience. All our themes have different use cases and come with a different set of options. That is why you could build a plugin for every functionality you provide – but it is near to impossible to have only ONE repository to manage. This is not a trivial thing to do, and, in my opinion, will be the end for many amateur programers here on themeforest who are responsible for the wide range of creativity around. Experienced programers, especially elite authors with bigger teams will get another boost.

If all these comments show one thing, it is that communication has been terrible on this topic from envato.
Change is good and this marketplace needs better standards but I am not sure that you are on the right track here.
You should introduce these new guidelines step by step over a long (long!) period and see how each of them turns out. Changing the whole game at once is simply insane.
I think the problem here is that the envato staff talking to us on this thread doesn’t really understand the reality of us authors. This is causing a lot of the confusion going on.
This is shown by the simple fact that you – originally – planned on a three week grace period for the new requirements to come into effect. Are you kidding me?! For an elite author, this seems extremely ignorant. The team responsible for this obviously never developed a theme for this marketplace.
It also seems to me that you know little about our customers. In real life we get questions like “how do I install WordPress” “how do I activate this theme” etc. Having to explain our customers that they need to install and activate “plugins” for their “website” to run is giving me a headache. I bet many don’t even know what a plugin is (yes – that’s real life)
It seems like you didn’t take into account the importance this marketplace has on many authors life. I pay most of my monthly fees through this marketplace – making such big changes and giving us a “three week grace period” causes me nightmares. Selling themes on tf is not a hobby, it’s not so I can buy me a beer once a while – it’s my main source of income! This is not facebook, people actually live from this site! You have a responsibility! You can’t just ask a few super duper top authors what they think and then change the game over night for everybody! I will move to a new place in the coming weeks, paying for it through my earnings – making such big changes has a fundamental impact on my future pans!
We are an elite author – why didn’t we get asked for our input? Why didn’t you send us a mail a few weeks back, telling us about your plans?
Taking into account the huge impact such changes have on authors – how could you not answer simple questions like wheather page builders are allowed or not??! How can you tell me that you planned this change in detail if you not have an answer to this question? Many many themes by top authors use page builders – how come you didn’t take that into account? As far as I see it it shows that you are living in a totally different world. You never created a theme for this marketplace. You don’t have to bother with our customers. You obviously don’t get enough feedback from authors.
Again, change is not bad but actually needed for this marketplace. But give us t i m e ! Talk to the community. Go step by step and see what works and what’s not. And never ever ever ever start a thread about changing hundreds of people’s businesses in three weeks just because you feel it’s a good time to do so.
Don’t be Microsoft.
I’ve been thinking of this as well but I am not sure if it’s worth the hassle as there is no reason to believe that old files will catch up on sales.
Maybe if envato features big updates on there site somehow that would be a good idea…
Three weeks is a joke really. We sometimes need months for a new theme as we don’t do it fulltime. Basically we can start from scratch for our current theme now because it won’t be finished in three weeks.
Give us more time!!

I received the elite care package the other day – the key chain has the new logo on it already. I actually thought this was some sort of printing error The “leaf” just doesn’t look like a leaf to me either.
But maybe it’s just a matter of time one gets used to it…
There is something wrong when an item has tons of 5 star ratings and then someone gives 1 star. The only reason I can think of is that a customer just doesn’t know how to use the item. If there was a bug that justifies a 1 star rating why have so many others rated 5 stars?
Customers should have to comment their 1 star rating and authors should be able to answer that comment (Buyer: “Theme doesn’t work – needs something called WordPress to run smoothly” Author: “Sorry to hear you have trouble – this is a WordPress theme – that’s why it needs WP to run smoothly”)
