https://www.digitalocean.com/pricing/
Just checked and all area seems higher than http://mediatemple.net/webhosting/vps/developer/ .

Are you sure you’re reading this right? DigitalOcean is much cheaper than MT.

EDIT: Or did you mean that all specs are higher, for a cheaper price? In that case, I wasn’t reading your comment right, instead. Oops! ;)

Just like the last couple of years, Google is hosting an online programming competition! As there are always a couple of enthousiasts around on these forums, I’d like to alert you guys to the 2014 edition. The qualifiers have just kicked off 10 minutes ago, so you still have 27 hours to score 25 points and qualify for the next round.

You can find Google Code Jam 2014 here

Annnnddd… Go! :chuckle: Do post here if you’re participating!

EDIT: Jeez. I guess we really did become a community of designers after all ;)

That’s crazy! Do you get the full 500Mbps?
Depends on the peering. For optimized / cloud / CDN sites like YouTube, Facebook, Yahoo! etc – yes, I get around 51MB / s ( 500 Mbps )

Note that 51MB/s is actually 400Mbps ;) There’s 8 bits to a byte.

Not to mention, imagine the blowback from the community if Envato launched a merch store without first resolving all the most-wanted features for the existing marketplaces. That’s got to be the priority.

I don’t think I agree with you on that one. The community is smart enough to realise that releasing a merch store would not mean that all the devs suddely dropped their usual (and important!) tasks. Merch would definitely be well-received ;)

It’s interesting to see that all the traditionally ‘less well-off’ countries have such above-average connection speeds. Did they start with fiber cables right away and skip the copper mess? :P

When looking at the title of this thread, I was going to suggest a WD Passport.. ;)

In any case, these things are usually subject to averages and outliers.. In my opinion you’re better off finding some statistical record somewhere from a data center that tested hundreds, rather than go by one or two individual reviews.

Transform the trackpad into an absolute pointing device! ( like pen tablets ) ;)

This exists ;)

EDIT: Just tested it. Works quite nicely!

..

So we would need some kind of proxy service to guarantee the images (and any other assets) are always served up over HTTPS, and then rewrite the item description HTML when it’s rendered to serve the images from the proxy server, instead of from their original URLs.

A couple of the devs had a play with that and got a prototype going as an internal hackweek project a few months back. Worked pretty well, but needs a lot of effort to get it production ready. That sort of thing would be what we’d use though.

Yeah, I can imagine it would be quite tricky to get that right, and it would put a (non-negligible) extra strain on the servers.. Good to hear you guys are working on that, though! :)

It would be awesome if Envato would be able to roll out SSL across the marketplaces – they’re dealing with financial transactions after all, so proper crypto is a must ;)
