Good old book printed on paper and well worth a read !
The Manual, The: How to Have a Number One Hit the Easy Way http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1899858652/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_awdl_nRKFtb06R6NNZ via @amazon
curious if any of you guys invest time in calling or emailing to post houses, tv stations corporations, etc. to promote your business. i know first hand that the big boy libraries do this and it no doubt generates sales.
If you do this, don’t send links from your AJ profile. Offer your freelance work instead and send 2-3 of your very best tracks as example / demo.
sometimes we might forget that Envato is not that new Maketplace anymore that needs to make compromises to get as many good authors / composers as possible for their market. Nowadays they clearly try to make it as simple as possible for them regarding what is allowed and what not.
Exclusice to AJ is like when you’ve benn signe exclusively to a record label in the past … you simply sold your soul
I agree with the fact, that selling the same music here and on iTunes might confuse your customers and lead them to buy it for 90cents on iTunes instead paying $15 on AJ. But other things have just become crazy and unfair for authors imo, like that we can’t even use our own music on our personal website or wherever to sell it to our existing and local customers outside of AJ. I don’t accept that as “comeptitive” amrket when i sell my own work to some business here in my neighbourhood. I would be stupid to send them to AJ or any other Ryoalty Free Audio marketplace and show them all MY “competitors”.
Don’t get me wrong, Envato is a great marketplace to earn some money for Authors, but from time to time we all should ask our self some questions regarding the system and rules. Unfortunately that does not mean we can change it in any way …. Envato can make the rules as ever they like, there is no law, no control mechanism, nothing.
Once more i sure earn some bad reputations for telling my thoughts about the situation and power of Envato. But it’s freedom of speech after all
Just sent him a message about that.
i’ve had a similar question recently but for Audiofiles. While other non-exclusive Authors opinion was, that it’s not O.K., we never received a official statement from Envato. Envato’s point is quite clear, they don’t want you as exclusive author to sell “similar” items elsewhere and they won’t do you a “favour” and say that it’s ok if you alter the file.
But from a legal and fair point of view, i would say that if you for example have a common / generic object like a soda can and you change the label and backgrounds and keep only the can itself, it is not a problem. A soda can is a soda can and looks the same all over the world (most of them). I for example invest another 5-10 hours to re-work my items and i don’t see why i should not be able to sell this different product elsewhere.
If i sell a T-Shirt with a Car on it in store A, why should i not be able to sell the T-Shirt in store B with a Plane on it ?
Sure, Envato makes the rules and if they want to punish you for doing so, they simply can. So i’d say it’s up to you what you want to do i guess .
i live in the northern part of Switzerland, but i do know Lausanne as well. It’s a “student city” and you will find a lot of options for more or less cheap food and living in a student community (if you want to). Otherwise it’s as some others already explained a very expensive country.
Many people from abroad think, everyone in Switzerland is rich, that might be so if compared to the income somewhere else. But if you check the prices here, you will need a good job to feel rich in Switzerland For artists and people with not so good jobs, it can be quite a hard place to live (money wise only for sure).
Anyway, i wish you a goos stay and feel free to contact me for any questions you might have, i’m happy to help.
i mainly do Photoshop Mockups for Graphicriver, as they sell more or less well. I asked the reviewer to review the complexity of my file and price it accordingly fair. My mockups are not a static picture with one smart object that sets the label over the 3D render. Every single object has a Alpha Channel / Mask and can be toggled on and off.
For this particular Mockup i spend like 2 full weeks from 3D Package modeling (scanned a real tray and modeled it) until the final Photoshop Mockup with the illustrated manual. I always record my working hours and it cam to 78 Hours for the 2 Templates and all included files.
So i asked for a price around $9 as i thought this would be fair for all the work i had. I only “ASKED” in the reviewer comments field of the upload and got this answer :
“Thanks for your request to review pricing on your item(s). Your suggestion is a recommended price only and there is no obligation on Envato to comply with the recommendation. We will make the final decision on your item’s price.”
Sure i know, i can’t dictate the price for my items, this is why i friendly asked to review the complexity of the file and did not expect such an answer.
However, if these items are priced that low and i am sure i can find them within a week on warez site, i think it’s just not worth the work.
What do you guys suggest, or what are your opinions on the prices for Mockups ?
And here you can see how they do work : https://vimeo.com/70855763
