Hello folks. Long time lurker here at Envato, and I figured this would be the place to ask for some help and/or suggestions.

What I’m looking for is… some input on what a person needs to do to better themselves in web development.

I have windows development knowledge in .NET (VB & C#). I am knowledgeable in HTML & CSS . I have what I would think of as an Entry Level knowledge base of ASP .NET & PHP .

I have a few idea’s lurking through my head right now that I would like to pursue and make something out of, but with my knowledge, or lack there of, in programming on the web.. I’m unsure where to start. Hence why I’m here looking for some input.

If it is not to much to ask, could I ask you experienced web developers to toss me some suggestions and/or input on what I can do to improve my skills.

Note: I am absolutely god awful at design. My artistic ability is terrible. My graphic design ability is terrible. I consider myself a great thinker and a semi-good programmer.

Input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks folks.

And the cost on this is what?

Most expensive one is 2000 usd, which is decent imo.

I maxed out the specs on it and got up to $3,849.00. That’s with a 2.8ghz i7 processor, 16gb of ram and a 2TB 7200 rpm drive.

Yup – Just looked it up.

2000 USD for the 2.6 quad core with 4gb ram and 1tb HD.

1700 USD for the 3.06 dual core with 4gb ram and 1tb HD.

So now the question is… is the extra 300-400 dollars extra worth it? IMO unless you play the high CPU power games, the dual core will do you just fine. If you want the best of the best, you’ll pay for it when you really won’t ever use it to it’s full ability.

If you can only learn one at a time, CSS is the obvious choice.

I can definately learn more than one at a time, but I like to focus on one at a time to get proficient in it. Focus 100% on that particular aspect and I tend to learn it way faster and get a better understanding.

CSS is mandatory for both web designers and developers. PHP is arguably less useful for a web designer, although I know many web designers are starting to do some light PHP stuff as well. But please, if you do decide to learn PHP , learn it properly. It’s frustrating to see lots of spaghetti PHP code floating on the Internet. :|

Well, as long as you think Jeff’s code is the “proper way”, then I shall be good :) Jeff’s tutorials do wonder’s for learning!

CSS is highly simplistic and doesn’t offer much of a challenge so do that first because it won’t take you long, and then jump on PHP after. PHP is more challenging language, and there’s so many aspects to grasp; it will keep you occupied for a while. ;)

This is what I figured. I understand a vast majority of CSS , just peicing websites together is where my experience lacks right now :)

Which should I focus on learning? I much rather do backend development. I know HTML pretty well, and I’m pretty familiar with CSS , just not to the point of putting together complex designs. I know how to use CSS , and understand it.

So my question is… Since I want to focus on backend development, should I say screw CSS (I was planning on studying it much more) and just start learning PHP ?

Windows 7 Ultimate :) I run it on my work desktop, work laptop, personal desktop, personal laptop. It’s by far the best OS windows has ever created.
Probably shouldn’t ask this question… but was it a torrent? or did you buy it? :p

Legit copy. My boss has a corporate MSDN license :) We don’t pay 3500$ for it for nothing! :)
