Also what software do you use to check you storage devices for preventing failure?
I think this thread will go up in Google Searches. :))

^ yeah that’s a NAS , well worth a purchase IMO , shop around and try and get one with a low wattage so it’s dead cheap to keep running… most will also run itunes servers and all sorts of other cool stuff too.. DSM is pretty good, runs my Diskstation![]()
What NAS do you recommend? I read a bit on the web about them, still got more research to do, but I want to get your opinion as well.
It’s worth mentioning that I’d like to have my backups done wirelessly, through time machine. So if I need an airport extreme to that, the NAS should support it – unless they already have support for wireless back-up. Don’t know much about this as you can see.

Thank you, will look into all this stuff.

I had backups on CD and DVD back in the 90s and when I tried to recover the files ten years later half of the stuff was broken, so I don’t reccomend to rely to much on one media. Store your precious data at least on two different places.
We have some fun! https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10150701268525991&set=t.559105990&type=3&theater
The alibaba screaming is to make fun of the Tunisian guy you see in the vid. I’m the one recording – that’s where I live now with my fiance.
In this video:
French guy + japanese wife with spanish kids
Italian guy + mexican wife
Romanian guy + moldavian girl
Chinese girl, tunisian guy, and us two.
Crazy crowd no? That’s how my life’s been in the past year. Pretty cool.

Gotcha. At the moment when I try to recover, everything is moved back to my iMac so I can use the two external HDD for that. So I’m hoping things don’t go bad with the iMac now. Can’t wait a week to make a back-up. F this, I’m gonna do it now.

bobocel saidfingers crossed you get it all back
Yeah, hope it will work. Right now is doing this for about 20 hours – http://o7.no/IVw2bp![]()

Ok, I have this question than. Let’s assume I have 500 GB worth of images. Those I definitely want to keep, but not to occupy space on my machine. So those will be moved to an external HDD or DVDs (anybody still using DVD ’s around?!).
Or you keep everything on your machine, and then make backups on top of that?
I guess storage dependency is as bad as oil dependency. I’d love to have 100000 TB available and never thing about file size again.
Thanks, I will look into RAID . This HDD that failed, has two hdd of 1 TB each, so I think it will be good to go with for RAID .
The HDD is seen by disk utility, only a partition isn’t recognized, but repair does not work.
At the moment I’m using disk warrior to try and recover the data. I’ll see how that goes.
Yes, it does happen to all of us sooner or later.
Right now I’m in the process of recovering around 400GB of data. Hope it will work. I’m currently using DiskWarrior. Don’t even want to say how I spent the last 4 days..
The reason for this post is different. I wanted to ask what you guys use for (MAC?) preventing HDD failure, to address issues such as:
1. Being notified upfront that the HDD is going to to fail.
2. Monitoring and increasing the lifespan
3. Back-up solutions
4. Anything else you can recommend? (defrag, verify and repair, etc)
Are SSD reliable? I think these are a bit too pricey. My 2TB hdd that I was using part for timemachine and part for storage failed. It was a WD.
