To be quite honest, I think Inspired was the wrong term for Jeffery to use as it’s rather broad. Although, What he should’ve used… well, That’s something I’m not so sure about. Maybe something like Similar..
You can be inspired, but still, not copy other templates, if that makes sense?
All in all, What I’m saying is take inspiration from some of the great authors here, but take the ideas you’ve gathered and make it into something that is your own, unique and not necessarily a similar copy in some way, shape or form.
When you take a good, long, hard look from a 3rd person perspective here at the market places at the nearly 46,000 items you start to find some flow in repetition and commonality appearing among the files – in particular Themeforest.
What we need to understand is not that they are rejecting inspired themes, but Envato and the Whole Marketplace Team are trying to bring more Unique files to the community – Of course with any business decision it is going to affect your customers, and with it hopefully being the right decision – you will always tick some customers off, although in the end the only benefit is to everyone. I mean, Authors become more creative and the more innovative the template is means more $$$. Buyers find really great files, something not found elsewhere and something that stands out.
Looking back on some top selling themes – you realise that when they came about they were new, fresh and had something to offer that nothing else did.
(I write down my ideas in what ever order i think of them, sorry if they’re a bit everywhere).
Take for example Google, Do you think if they released their search engine that was basically
the same as Yahoo – manually entered & slow – that they would be the multi billion dollar company they are today? No, they would not be – with innovation, further development and refinement they have become Numero Uno in the search industry, and if you ask people about searching the first thing they say is Google.
This is exactly what Envato are trying to bring about in their authors, All in all, We should be grateful as not only does it mean we build better stuff here, but it affects us in every other way – it assists in our Full-Time work, Education, Social Life, etc.
I hope my view can be helpful to some of you in some way
