I’d suggest taking a look at Easy Digital Downloads along with the Frontend Submissions extension:

There are scripts and gateways similar to EDD in the marketplace, so how does it not compete? Even if it is free, you aren’t supposed to link to free files. I’m sure the mods well agree.

Then WooCommerce competes as well.

Sorry mordauk, but you know you shouldn’t link to a competing product in the forums.

It has nothing to do with it being a competing product or not; it’s simply that I know it can be done with EDD and I know how to do so it is a very viable alternative. Nothing wrong with that at all.

As the lead developer of Easy Digital Downloads, I’d certainly love to see TF developers build more themes for us.

If you’d like a good starting point, here’s where to look: https://easydigitaldownloads.com/blog/want-to-create-themes-for-edd/

I am completely against not having theme developers use short codes. If you need to install plugins for all these short codes. ( like the beautiful vertical tabs in the Enfold theme), your site is getting extremely slow, not to mention that it will be a lot of work to style everything nicely. And conflicts. lots of them.

Plugins in no way affect the speed of your site. You can literally have 200 plugins and your site will run at the exact same speed.

It is only the quality of code and what the code is doing inside of the plugins that affects site speed.

Whether features exist in a plugin or in a theme, the performance impact is identical.

Like Carl, I do not know of a solution that actually fixes the formatting caused by wpautop, but I can say that the issues caused by messing with the default content filters are much more drastic than the inability to easily use column short codes.

The entire idea of a column short code is against what short codes are supposed to be anyway, but that’s a whole other debate :D

I’d suggest taking a look at the work Mike McAlister does: http://themeforest.net/user/mikemcalister – He uses a single “Okay Themes Toolkit” plugin that houses all of his functionality, and each of his themes is very unique.
can his plugin be used with other themes as well ? does he support it in this case ?
You’d have to ask Mike.
Let’s say I’m working on a directory and real estate theme, do you think all the functionality can be handle in a ULTIMATE plugin?

All of the functionality related to the real estate features should be in one plugin.

If a feature (such as a CPT) needs to exist with and without the theme, then you just register it globally, regardless of what theme is active.

What happens if:

1.) His users only install theme and not the plugin 2.) His users go to another theme leaving plugin installed

I’m interested in how he handles that.

P.S. Maybe that could be a topic in the new episode of Please Advise

If the plugin that provides a certain feature isn’t active, then the theme should act as a standard theme. In the context of this whole discussion, the theme would act as a “simple skin”, but then when the plugin is activated, the advanced features become available.
