You are free to use any slider in your themes the license of which clearly allows you to do so. MIT /GPL licenses are perfect for such cases. The license of majority of sliders Like Nivo, Piecemaker, etc… allows you to use them in your themes. Basically from my experience 99% of free sliders come with such licenses. And about using own slider, look around, almost all authors use one or another popular plugin for the sliders. Hope this helps.

Well, HTML codes are reserved sequences of symbols/characters. If you are familiar with non-web programming languages, you might know every character has its code. And Capital character’s code might differ from lowercase one’s. Thus, browser may have reserved the sequence &nbsp but not the &NBSP. This may not be 100% accurate, as this is my own idea of why it shouldn’t work. Maybe someone else would give more thorough answer to this.

If you are good with Wordpress and PHP programming in general I’d recommend buying some high quality themes (in terms of backend) and begin digging into them. I started this way and based on what I learnt created my own options framework which has proven to be good almost in all aspects. Hope this helps.
