@ white elephant it’s “motivation” released yesterday.

Joking aside, I actually find it difficult to actually come to some sort of conclusion as to how we can actually break away from the formulaic corporate/ comercial music “sound” . I think about the dilemma all the time. If customers need a “positive, non intrusive to VO, safe, friendly, familiar, motivating, light underscore” vibe… How else can it be done?

I don’t think it can be produced because no one wants to hear or buy music with advanced harmony. Literally no one. I recently read somewhere that jazz is the least popular form of music right now in the US. That’s pretty sad actually.

http://thejazzline.com/news/2015/03/jazz-least-popular-music-genre/ I vote for a “swing” contest…lets revitalize jazz!

I’ve done pretty well with jazz, but granted, I always try to give my jazz influenced tracks a commercially friendly, upbeat and quirky feel.

Hi, great to hear your opinion, I think that if you do venture beyond the corporate category, you will find A LOT of music that is original and would suit your needs. I think for you, that is the way to go, and it’s really lovely to know that there are still buyers out there that are looking for something different! ;-)

Indeed, well put, Flossie :)

To everyone who has replied, THANK YOU! You have provided an insight that I didn’t realize was a reality in your world: AJ doesn’t want new and fresh, they want tried and true. As an artist, I ache for you guys and the creativity that’s being stifled. Perhaps I’ll open up my search to different categories in hopes of finding something different that still fits in the corporate video world.

Thanks for your opinions, Jason, you raised interesting points.

Again, I just want to make clear that any opinions I express here are my personal ones, and not on behalf of Envato.

Personally I don’t feel stifled. I try to write music of character, which has commercial viability. In an ideal world, progressive rock would be the in thing, and I’d be submitting stuff in 17/8 time and singing like Geddy Lee, but I don’t think it would sell! :)

Seriously though, it is fantastic to hear new and fresh stuff, I think we would all agree that. I think it is possible to write new and fresh, whilst still being commercially viable.

In my personal opinion as an author: Good points all round, but I think there is something for everyone here. If you are looking for stuff in the latest most popular styles, you will find plenty to choose from, but you will also find no shortage of items with individual style and character if you look.

My personal opinion as an author on AJ is: I’ve used single word titles once or twice, only because the single word summed up the track, but I’m not going to go down that road. I try to make a title which is either descriptive, or otherwise gives some clue to the mood or style of the track.

Personally, ideally, I don’t want my titles to be the same as everyone else’s, and I don’t want to use single generic words, or spend time calculating the most effective sequence of words for titles. I prefer to make titles which have some degree of individuality, whilst still giving a hint about the style of track. So, from now on, I’m going back to naming my tracks whatever I feel like naming them, regardless of how this might effect search results, but of course, I will monitor the situation.
