It’s all CSS animations and pretty simple. The triangle is created using borders on an elements :before or :after pseudo elements. You can use an online generator to create the triangle.

The animation itself is fading in opacity of the triangles parent and animating the triangles top value to move it up into view. The triangle is absolute positioned so although it is technically inside the parent in the hierarchy it isn’t necessarily inside its parent when you see it on the screen.

The animations are triggered on the child element when you hover over the parent element.

<div class="portfolio-item">
<img src="#" alt="" />
<div class="portfolio-item-preview">
:before <!-- the triangle is added to this -->
<div class="portfolio-item-buttons" />
</div>
</div>
.portfolio-item:hover .portfolio-item-preview { opacity: 1; }
.portfolio-item:hover .portfolio-item-preview:before { top: XXXpx; }

It’s mostly to add credibility. As Lumbermandesigns said, it makes potential customers feel comfortable and putting a face to a business makes the business more trustworthy. But of course there are many cases where the faces on a website are stock images and the team members completely fabricated.

I’ve been using beta and RC versions for a few months now and I have not noticed any compatibility issues at all.

If they really want to improve the experience: Instead of trying to force this, I would suggest to make it easier for authors to support their items. I am not talking about a full fledged support solution on the marketplace, I actually prefer my own support forums where I can add features as I see fit, but an oAuth login for example is long overdue.
Same here, it is much easier and convenient to provide the support via our own system. I use the help forum and zendesk. I have a huge knowledgebase and documentation on my own site. I do not want to move to another system.
You have to remember that you are in the minority. The vast majority of authors on the Marketplace do not have their own external support systems in place and I do not think it is fair to expect them to develop their own solutions to a problem effectively forced on them by Envato.

Authors have been asking for an integrated support system for a very long time. After 3 years of waiting your response is to make support mandatory for 6 months and to take a 30% cut without providing the support system we originally pleaded for.

Yes you can use (some) HTML tags in the description textbox. You might find this useful: http://revaxarts-themes.com/envatitor/

Artzone’s advise is completely wrong. You can’t use other peoples images without their permission. If you do not own the copyright to an image you cannot use it.

http://notes.envato.com/general/use-of-assets-in-previews-on-envato-marketplaces/

You have three choices:
  1. Create your own.
  2. Use an online generator to create some.
  3. Ask copyright holders for permission to use their images. A good idea might be to ask local musicians as they are more accessible.

I think there is a distinction between the literal definition of “parallax” and the web design trend labelled parallax which is actually a broad term used to describe any type of layered scrolling effect.

If the background and page content are not scrolling at the same speed (even if that means the background is not scrolling at all) then it is a parallax effect. I agree it’s a quick and easy parallax, but it is parallax none the less.

What in my reply made you think I was upset? I was just asking you to clarify what your point was as it wasn’t very clear in your post.
