I’ve been using foundation for quite a long time now and its awesome, especially version 3. It’s also possible to switch off the responsive layout by removing the media queries and removing the viewport metatag from the header.
I am also using a modified version of the framework in my latest themes. It’s a real joy to work with.
Every time I loose something in the house the first thing that comes to mind is Google.
Hey Luke, You could use css3 media queries to decrease the width of the container just in the portrait mode and let the others use the 980px width.

This should generate the menu html which you can then style with css. You also need to include the superfish in the header and call it.
As dekciw mentioned, the codex should show you how the menu works.
