Sam, you can find a good preamp for less. Sometimes I use a Presonus Blue Tube, it has a nice warm sound. Or you can drive your guitar through a small mixer and then to your audio card. The old Behringer used to be quite good for this, you may purchase an used MX1602 (16 channels, with phantom power). Also the new Xenyx line from Behringer is not bad, but a little cheesy compared to the old ones from the 90’s.
