What a great talk, really inspiring stuff! Thanks for sharing.
I had no problems keeping up with what Collis said, in fact I love how fast he talks – the guy just has so much energy and drive!
It was really interesting to hear just how much of a risk it was at the start for you guys. Newly married, no home, no money, credit card debts, investment debts to your parents and living with your in-laws. It makes me really realise how lucky we are to have these marketplaces. It’s not just that it makes it easier for us to make money, it’s how little risk is actually involved in doing so.
Interestingly I started here when I was newly married, living with my mother-in-law and with credit card debt looming over me (we had an actual bedroom though, rather than an old toilet :P). In my case though, I had a full time design job and decided to begin adding graphics for sale here. After a while, I was able to reduce my hours at work from the money I made here. Then eventually I was able to leave and split my time between adding files here and doing freelance client work. I’ve now been self-employed 2 years and having finished my first WordPress theme earlier this year, I’ve made the decision to begin moving more in that direction and phasing out client work.
My brother is increasingly becoming involved in the business (also stepping down his full time job) and within a year we’re hoping to have a decent-sized business sustaining the both of us and our families, and giving us the freedom to work on what we love.
Thanks to these marketplaces, I’ve been able to do this whole thing with basically no risk to my families financial stability (which is good because I now have a 9 week old baby to worry about too!).
Thank you Collis, thank you Envato
Yep, you get the badge as soon as they add you to the queue to be featured.
I got it, then got an email from the community manager letting me know I’d be featured and which week it would start. As I recall, it was about 2 weeks from when I got the badge to when I was the actual featured author.
So yeah, congratz
Sorry to be negative on this one, but…
I think you need to take a 1-2 year break Collis, go travel the world or something. That will give the rest of your company time to catch up with all your ‘projects’, so that things aren’t left severely lacking in features
Also, please keep this unconnected from the marketplaces. Double-sided business cards for $35 and app icons for $100 (all with a money back guarantee) is the kind of pricing that promotes bottom of the barrel design that will, in my opinion, tar the whole company.
...having said all that. I thought that adding logos to GR was a massive mistake, and it seems that I was wrong on that one. So who knows…!
+1 to what AppVolt said!
Sounds good, I’m in!
Also, to echo what others have said. Resolution should still be set to 72ppi, you simply need to make the actual size of your work twice the size. A retina ready button, for instance, would simply appear twice the size on a normal screen.
Thanks for doing this guys
Looks like you’ve moved most of mine, but missed these two:
Great news, thanks for keeping us in the loop Scott
Couldn’t agree more. We need a section for UI sets!
I currently have 4 full UIs on GR, one is in ‘Web Elements > Sliders & Features’, one is in ‘Web Elements > Misc’, and two are in ‘Web Elements > Forms’. Yet they all have largely the same sort of UI elements in them. Makes no sense!
Good luck guys, you’re going to have a pretty crappy week – but Envato will get through this.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what this does to Tuts+. You guys really think you’ll have it back up within 48 hours of the notes blog post? Are you not allowing the devs to sleep at all?
