I think one of the issues here is the probability of someone rating your item. Most people who purchase an item and are happy with it stop there, they don’t bother to rate your item or leave a comment, because they have received what they expected. Unless something is particularly special, in which case you may get a few people leaving complements.

However, people who are dissatisfied, for whatever reason, have a hugely increased probability to leave a rating, and thus the more sales you have, the more your rating will be biased by these people.

I’ve been rather lucky with my ratings. However, I’ve not had the same volume of sales that you have, so I expect that as I accumulate more sales, I’ll also accumulate more negative ratings. I expect that the average rating tends towards 4-stars, perhaps 3 in some cases.

On the bright side, I don’t believe that many people are biased by the ratings, anyway. I for one, would check the comments before purchasing a file, rather than just looking at the ratings.

I do however agree that a system that forces comment alongside ratings would be desirable.

Hey,

I’m not entirely sure why there are certain authors who’s files make a huge volume of sales (if I did then I’d be one of the top authors ;) ); however, these files are always good (not always technically difficult to produce, but high-quality design). Besides, this happens in any system, which is why certain manufacturers begin to rule markets (for example nVidia and ATi are the main GPU manufacturers), so I think it’s highly unlikely this could be stopped in this system.

Also, a lot of people who buy from these sites arrange the files in order of those that have the most sales (sometimes the most ratings), this is because many people think that because something has been purchased many times, it must be good, this is not always true of course, but does hold true a lot of the time. This is one thing that encourages the same authors to be consistently high sellers.

Yes, you are right that the highest sellers are on the busiest marketplaces, but again, this is something that is always the case, if you set up a market stool in an empty square, you aren’t going to make much money, but if you set it up in a busy square, you are much more likely to accumulate sales.

I don’t think there is a big problem with the way Envato has designed it’s marketplace system, it works very well, and although it does help those at the top to stay at the top, it is possible to be a new user and still make a huge number of sales.

Looks really awesome.

Looks great! However, I don’t quite get the big deal to be honest: Don’t the majority of people interact with Twitter via desktop and mobile apps? Who actually uses Twitter.com to tweet?

I also use Twitter.com to tweet, mainly through lack of a mobile device to use and through not wishing to use a 3rd party application when I can just as easily use my browser. :P
