We shared our decision on paid updates/annual renewals earlier on in the thread, as well as in previous threads on this topic. For anyone who missed it, we won’t be introducing paid updates.Here’s a recap of the main reasons why:
- Authors update items in many different ways…some only do basic updates and security patches. Others try to continuously add value through new features. Some do both and everything in between.
- Buyers are fearful of having to pay for a basic updates/security patches in the future and some have said they would not buy that item if they had to, meaning the author may not get the sale in the first place.
- To get around this, we’d need a major/minor versioning system – major for value-add updates (possibly paid) and minor for basic/security patch updates (possibly unpaid) – this would add a lot of complexity and considering that authors update in very different ways would be hard to manage.
- We consistently hear support is a significant ongoing cost for authors that is mounting with time so we want to address this as a priority but not rule out addressing updates at some point in the future.
I dont see the problem with annual renewal system.
Any required / security fixes are required to be made by the author, because every item here on sale needs to be functioning properly / as per description, otherwise its going to be removed from sale. If any buyers bought the item which was later removed and are still within their annual free to download period, they can easily get a refund if requested.
What if left is that renewing an item annual download period can be done by the buyer at their discretion at any time in the future, regardless of how many times any particular item has been updated, weather it had many, few on none updates at all.
This all in the end probably means that authors will get less sales since buyers will have to spend part of their revenue for the updates, but in the end, I believe most authors will rather choose this system than free lifetime updates.
For buyers that continually support authors by buying the item repeatedly, this will not change anything, because instead of buying the item again, they will just buy an annual renewal.
One of your biggest and fastest-growing competitors recently confirmed to me that their business model is a “reseller/commission” and the commission is always 70%, even if you just started selling or have sold $1 million worth of products, and there is no “exclusivity” monopoly-like rules over there.

Envato, why dont you put your own name on your invoices? Its that simple.
So they can put our data on the invoices after all..
And the ToS rules were always a joke as long as one ToS rule states that ToS can be changed.
This is all going to change.. as it can be clearly seen from the actions made so far, Envato will invoice our names/addresses with buyers details I guess, support becomes mandatory… etc I wont even think about the past years…
