Of course you are right about less competition, but you need to take a look from a perspective of flexibility of those themes. If I was running niche business, I would work on making it look different than others. This is easier with multipurpose themes. What is more niche themes may get old much faster than simple multipurpose ones.

I think it’s better to do a safe design for “all purposes”, but with a delicate accent of some innovation. Then users get what they want, your theme gets exposure – it’s a win-win situation. Niche themes can have really short life I think, you may sell 500 copies first month, and end up a year with 550 overall sold copies.

I don’t think we can say that average files size is 100mb, you know, there is videhive, graphicriver, 3d ocean – those are markets where files are huge, and I think that envato’s filesize limits to 1gb are real pain for authors ;) on the other hand on codecanyon files may be really small. It’s a rulette for sure, but envato must have really strong hosting platform ;)
