Since the announcement of “Author Driven Refunds” doesn’t cover how the sales count / comments / ratings will be treated in these scenarios, it is inevitable to expect staff answer on this.
In case the ratings remain after refund, most probably this will trigger more abusive buyers who blackmail with ratings + refund claim (even from competitive authors). Will add more pressure on author end since the buyers aware author can just refund.
Ratings aside, another subject we have to focus is, who will initiate the refund. Buyer or author? One more problem is refunds alone will not cover the actual loss of buyers. For example if a buyers expects/depended guaranteed support in timely manner (as advertised by author or market) and author fails to support and just makes a refund, this can create upto few hundred times more loss than item price.
TL;DR : Any kind of promise is a false advertisement. The concept of replicating “Successful authors” is another false advertisement / motivation
Advertising with Zero-Bug concept would be equally misleading as Mandatory-Support policy. Both can become misleading advertisements.
The problem right now is not with authors or buyers. They give / expect what they are able to / unable to.
For the last 4-5 years, Envato is indirectly benefiting the voluntary supportive nature of authors. Even without mandatory policy, it is the authors who supported for following reasons (I guess):
1. As a help towards buyers – with the understanding of inconsistent nature of code based products.
2. Gives competitive value / advantage.
3. Avoid bitter feedback from buyers – regardless limited knowledge of buyers
So by making the support mandatory, the Reason #1 mentioned above will vanish over time. Point #3 will dominate. “Quality of support” will reduce and point #2 will lose its meaning within single year. Buyers will see inconsistency in support more than ever. Envato will advertise the ecosystem as efficient as “6 months support + 72 hours response time”.Collis’s quote on the main blog post:

The scaring truth is, Envato benefited from voluntary efforts of successful authors who setup their own support channels to make it efficient (Envato missed to improve this area and just focused on irrelevant new ventures like PhotoDune and Microlancer). Still now the Comments section is a pain for the authors as they have to answer buyers in 2 channels simultaneously – if they have to be successful and efficient. Both buyers and authors are facing difficulties here – it is a long unsolved painful story.
Now, instead of improving the system and give back the authors / buyers / industry, Envato wants to replicate same efforts put by the so called successful authors. From my observation, the successful authors are the ones who went far beyond Envato’s ecosystem and its limits and that’s why succeeded. But now Envato wants every authors to do the same level of efforts – while knowing it is impossible to achieve top 10 by 100s of people – due to competitive nature of market. Where is the equation?
@natman, An additional measure to reduce the impact of abused items would be worth – in favour of competitive items. For example, make those items disabled for 1 week so that those items have to earn the popularity from scratch. Explain this penalty on knowledge base.
To put it simply when you charge someone money, like a Buyer Fee, the first thing they ask is “What am I getting for this?” That’s actually a good question for Envato to be answering because we’ll end up doing a better job. In fact one of the first things we’re doing is adding a new Why Buy With Us page. This marks one of the first times we’ve had a page deliberately aimed at buyers!.
@Collis, In the blog post, under “Why the Changes to Fee Structure?” the above paragraph explains as if the buyer fee (20% one?) is real. Since the Item prices altered in single day and a new term “listing price” introduced in favour of keeping the final price unchanged, does’t this leads to the assumption that item value is subject to change in the future?
For example, what prevents Envato to announce in future that 30% is Buyer fee and 0% is author fee for Elites? There is no explanation about why exactly 20% is Buyer fee and why not it is 10%? Is this a gauge to weigh author Vs buyer contribution on the development of market?
The buyers who are silent right now are encouraged to assume they pay more fee than (elite) authors? Any hidden business motive behind this virtual value shifting?
Again, these arrangements look fine as long as this utilized just for enhancing buying experience but it gives worries since the item value indirectly got reduced – and open to be reduced some way in the future? (All my fear is about December announcements )
But with two different fees, they’ll have more control since changes in fees can always be justified, but changing the item price and commission rate is more difficult.
Yes, when they add shopping cart, for multiple item purchases, there is a possibility of buyer fee reduction without affecting author fee and payment.
But who knows – by next year, if Envato announces buyers are paying their 30% fee and Elite authors paying nothing? Or even say buyers are paying 50% fee to Envato and Elite authors getting 20% fee “from” Envato?
Now the actual item price become jeopardy – open to abuse item value Vs Envato’s fee.
@MhW, In the earnigns page, it shows 12.5% instead of 70%. This not even matches with the context of earnings page.
You can simply display the word “70% of Item price”. What makes the system to desperately show 12.5% fee even on unnecessary pages? It is understandable to show fee on other pages where relavant but why show even on author earnings page?
@KingDog, Personally I understand the context of change but this confuses authors not only as an announcement but the Earnings page and Statements Page stopped showing the real %.
The Earnings page now shows 12.5% for elite authors – this is nowhere connected with the earnings calculation. Hope this is understandable.
