Looks like it’s incompatible with ProTools 9? Benji, you’re a PT guy right? Are you at 10 or 11? I’m always a little wary to upgrade right away out of fear things won’t be compatible. Have you had any trouble upgrading to PT 10 or 11? Thanks!

Actuallly I’m on reaper now, so I’m using the au/vst.

1. Listen to your favourite records, and favourite mixes on your new monitors. You know what they are supposed to sound like because you’ve listened to those songs hundreds of times before. This will help you “learn” how your monitors sound in your environment.

2. Don’t listen to anybody who says X brand is better than Y. Or you need ones with more bass, better cross overs, blah blah blah. EVERY speaker is unique and coloured, and if it works for you, then that is what matters.

3. Mix at different levels. Especially at softer levels. At higher db levels the human ear response evens out over the spectrum and can make your mixes sound better than they actually are.

4. A/B your mixes with a tracks that you are trying to emulate or approximate.

5. Listen with the door open. Listen with the door closed. Listen in different spots in the room. In the sweet spot, outside the sweet spot, near the walls, in the center of the room. Listen to them outside the room. Your speakers interact with the room, so learn the room as well.

6. Fatigue can really screw with your perspective. Take frequent breaks, as you feel you need to, it always helps to come back with fresh ears.

7. If you can afford, a second set of monitors is a great investment. (Different brand/size) Even switching between headphones, and monitors in order to check different aspects of the mix can be helpful.
