Also, on a seperate point. I think your ‘home-grown’ author should be DesignCrumbs (jake). His themes are now 100% GPL and he was the driving force behind the change.
+1 that motion.

Also great idea about DesignCrumbs being the featured author for EnvatoMail, a nice closing of the loop so to speak!

Wow, thanks guys! I’m constantly amazed by our community. I was just drinking my morning coffee while reading what happened overnight (for me) and then I see the community “nominating” me. It was a pleasant surprise. :smitten:

I don’t believe that the average buyer has an idea of what GPL is or that it does matter for him.. Because the GPL thing came from wp.org not from the buyers..
Actually I’m pretty sure the average buyer simply doesn’t care about licenses and doesn’t read them, he/she wants to buy theme and setup a website, that’s all.

Agreed. Not only that, but others are making the argument that distributing of the themes will occur. Sure, it will, but it happens already. People do what they want with the themes regardless of the license. And the buyers who buy a license for each site they use it on will also still do that because its the right thing to do, again, regardless of the license.

I’ll report this to the author.

And I’ll make fun of him for it on a live podcast.

Interesting and good to know. I’m not surprised that no one knows this, so I’m glad it’s finally all getting cleared up. Maybe that’s why no one buys the Extended License! No one knows what it is or how they can/should use it. Buyers are familiar with the Developer license from every other theme shop, and it would integrate well into ThemeForest.

Agreed. A dev license for 3x-5x the cost of the theme would likely convert a lot more sales.

Great timing guys. As some of you are aware, I put up a post today that talks about WordPress, Envato, and GPL: http://www.designcrumbs.com/automatically-blackballed

Any chance we’ll be seeing an option for WP themes to be 100% GPL?
