Ask yourself this, in a real world scenario, can any container (for example a teacup) contain itself? Highly improbable. The same applies when adding elements to the display list via the addChild() method. I strongly suspect that AS3 will bark at you (ie throw an exception) if you try that.

Try to come up with an estimate as to how long it might take for you to put something like this together. Multiply that estimate by a value in the range 1.5 to 2 inclusive to account for change requests, code blocks and other potential pitfalls during the course of development.

This should give you a rough idea of the number of hours you will need to complete the project. Multiply that total by your hourly rate (if you don’t have one, find the average hourly rate of your most recent projects and go from there). If the resulting value is equal to or greater than your quoted price, walk away.

If the reverse is true consider reducing your quote, but not so much that your gains are impractical in the face of your daily expenses.

One thing is for sure: 1. Javascript is not so bad, once you get the hang of it you love it (we hate it because with javascript you also have to know HTML , CSS and test on different browsers). Not to forget that there are some powerful JS frameworks right now that leverage the MVC architecture. I’m not talking about jquery (I’m talking about extjs, backbone, dojo, nodejs-for srverside).

2. Flash is not anymore for everybody (like making a website that you place elements on the timeline and so on). Flash will be about heavy OOP /design patterns/physics programming AND this is a good thing (my opinion). I also think some of Flash devs will make a sh load of money with all this shift for games (more that they could have made by building websites/banner rotators all life).

3. Most of good AS3 devs will be the best JS/HTML5 programmers anyway. I do not believe in this CS6 /Edge tools from Adobe, that is targeting people who were creating stuff within timeline before and will be used for banners like and not complex stuff.

+1 on all points.

What are you looking for exactly? Do you require someone to build a native extension or use an existing native extension?

I’ve been playing with objective-c and it’s so much smoother. I can do an alpha dissolve and it’s smooth as butter. With Flash it’s impossible. Super clunky.

With the release of AIR 3 .2 earlier this week this may no longer be the case. Care to take the latest release candidate for a spin and give us feedback on how it performs?
