I must agree that “The key is to experiment.” as felt_tips said.
Im always compress few times and choose best quality but with lower datarate.
Its just a few minutes more for me for experiment, but big time and nerves saving for buyers.
i prefer 640×360, but i like when author provide vimeo/youtube link with 1280×720 preview

Mark, can you tell us what is next step for videohive? Do you and other envato staff maybe think about separated site with stock videos and images?
In that case we could have:
- one site (vh) with projects sources (ae, ae+c4d(+maybe other 3d files))
- another site with stock footages and images.
I think that if adobe has developed a better true 3D integration in after effects (you know 3ds -> psd -> ae), maybe c4d would not be so interesting now.
Who knows what is adobe’s plan for cs6, cs7… Time will tell us…
