There is no confusion Collis, Envato has always stated that they pay an author a commission for selling their items, now you’re saying Envato are taking a commission for letting the author sell their items.

They are 2 different items and have consequences for authors, if the author is receiving commission then Envato pays the sales tax on the purchase and is liable for the customer, if the author is paying Envato a fee for it’s services (author is the seller) then the author has to pay the sales tax and is liable for the buyer.

You are going down a very slippy slope, an example:

Avada, made over $4 million in sales, now you’re saying they were supposed to be paying sales tax on their income, which could mean their governments come after the authors for the backdated revenue which could be as much as $700,000.

You need to do some serious thinking about what Envato’s process in this is as you choose the wrong option and you could ruin the marketplaces, authors cannot be made to be liable for sales tax, that’s your role as the “supermarket” for the items.

Hey Everyone :)

We’ve been following this as well because our ThemeFusion account is under my name (Luke) and I live in the States.

I’m pretty sure that the above statements about sales tax are not correct. The author would not be liable for sales tax. However, if I am wrong and this has changed, then …

a) it will NOT be retroactive and affect old sales, it would only affect new sales in 2015.

b) they would have to start charging the tax WITH the sale and it would be charged to the buyer, not the seller after the fact.

Collis please correct me if I am wrong. If I am wrong, then there is definitely reason to panic and this has to be looked at in a new light.

Cheers! Luke

Hey Luke,

He actually stated somewhere in the wee pages of this discussion that it would not be retroactive, but starting in 2015 (so there is a small plus).

:)

Sales down. support sucks people steal our work everyday envato dose little help. we have to drive traffic to gain sales. we do the work. we follow strict rules

Now we have to pay taxes..

looks like ether they gives us more or time for us to look for a better market.

Actually, support doesn’t suck but that’s a good attitude.

if we can actually report the new ‘author fee’ we pay Envato (along with partner earnings) as negative income this situation might not be as bad as it seems. :)

Yup, better tracking of write-offs ;)

Now wouldn’t it be cool if we just had a random author day where everyone buys an item from 1 lucky person?

Why do you always have to have the good ideas? :smug:

how do i make payment from my Nigeria MasterCard because skrill is not available in Nigeria?

We use both PayPal and MoneyBookers (Skrill) so you would need to check if they work in your country here:

PayPal

Skrill

Skrill is a little harder to track down but they work in 200 countries and 40 currencies. Might need to contact their help desk to find out more.

I actually think that the country of Nigeria has special restrictions, and not so much PayPal or Moneybookers.
