Most of the times when the file is not working is the customers fault because the theme is working on the demo website….. Most of the times, there are bugs, and if they are bugs and the author is sleeping. Do you rate it 1 star? Can he sleep? And ifthe problem is just wordpress know how and it’s not the theme’s fault or the author’s job to teach wordpress? What do you do? Rate it 1 star?
I see what you’re saying, but let me give you an example, (If naming is not allowed, apologies).
I liked the file ‘shine’ which first came as a psd template, which I purchased. After a few weeks they released an wordpress theme. It had major bugs and it didn’t work, a lot of people complained in the discussion page. I contacted the author, turned out somebody else did the coding so he forwarded my email to the author. (He didn’t reply to me, saying he forwarded it, but just fwded it). The one who coded it was familiar with the problems and was working on an update, he helped me via the email. He even got the ftp details and all. At a point he said he would do a complete reinstall, I would loose all my details cause of the new version. I agreed, he installed it but the same problems still existed.
We kept in touch via email and the discussion form, coder kept promosing he would fix the problems and more people purchased the theme, more people with problem. Suddenly the file was removed from themeforest, according to envato support, the file was removed by the author.
From that moment on he stopped responding to the conversation and cause the file was removed, the discussion page was removed.
I truly think this file deserved a 1 star and I even feel that envato should refund to certain users. (Not to me personally cause the author tried) but the rating is regarding the file, not the author.

If an author promised support , he cannot sleep for weeks no, I think when somebody tries to contact the author and the author did not respond within 1 week; then the buyer is allowed to rate 1 star.

Some themes are so difficult to set up, and sometimes settings/control options are not coded right… In that case it is indeed the author’s fault.
To give you another example, I browsed my files and found a file I purchased from codecanyon, beforehand I contacted the author because in the description he promised an updated version with extra features, the update would be free if you purchased the file. I purchased the file but the update never came. He posted a message saying that because of lack of time the update was cancelled. In my eyes ; this is fraud. And this author deserves a 1 star. I would love giving you more examples but only these are the ones I rated 1 star..
