Hi everyone,

Apologies for the delay on the update on this. I chose to hold off updating until we had made sufficient progress that actually resolved some of these concerns being raised. As I mentioned before, we’re changing the way that items entering the review queues are ordered based on data analysis showing potential methods for better review efficiency and faster processing (especially for those following the rules).

This means a few things but I first want to clarify that the review queues are fairly complex in the way and order items are reviewed. There’s a wide number of variables that affect the order items are reviewed, how quickly they’re reviewed and specifically when they’ll be reviewed depending on how you’re looking at the queues and which questions you’re asking. For example, we have reviewers located all over the world with varying skillsets that work different schedules and varying lengths of time. This, by itself, creates enough complexity that it’s practically impossible to specify exactly when an item will be reviewed, which is why we have a 7 day turnaround time maximum target. However, even that target isn’t a guarantee because we sometimes have high volumes of items submitted at once that we can’t predict and therefore quickly become under resourced for a period of time (though we typically maintain a much faster turnaround time).

Beyond the complexity of review team resource management and the workload we’re expecting in coming months, items have a variety of states they can be in depending on where they are in the life of an item. Each of these states have different values to various parts of the community (authors, buyers, etc). For example, if an item has a bug and an author fixes it and updates the item, we want to be processing those updates as quickly as possible to ensure buyers are getting the best quality product possible and have fewer issues in turn reducing potential buyer support requests (and since time is money, saving an author’s time is very important to us!).

Similarly, we’re aiming to improve the fairness of review time spent across items in the queue from all authors. For example, if an author decides not to follow the guidelines and policies we ask everyone to follow, it can actually take more time to process items from that author and unfairly disrupts everyone else in the queue by taking up a disproportionate amount of resources that would otherwise be available.

As you can imagine, there’s a significant amount of information we want to take into consideration to ensure the review queues are flowing smoothly, fairly and efficiently. What we’re actively working towards is a more intelligent review system that will do the majority of this automatically (far more efficient and frees up more team resources to review faster or improve other parts of the system!).

The unfortunate side effect to this is that it’s far more difficult to accurately tell authors how close their item(s) are to being reviewed or how long it will take after being submitted. This is why the current progress bar can no longer be used to indicate this information, which we’ll be working on a fix for as soon as possible. Similarly, comparing how long your update or resubmission has been waiting against other author’s items doesn’t work depending on the category, state, assigned reviewers, reviewer shifts, available resources, etc.

Hopefully that helps clarify the complexity around the review queues. For the particular situation where items in specific states were being delayed, we’ve resolved that and are continually monitoring the queues to watch for unexpected delays or other issues.

I obviously won’t be able to go into detail about their pay but the basics aren’t really a secret. The majority of our Review team is remote and located all over the world, a large percentage having come from being authors, and work as independent contractors on an hourly rate.
