It’s not always quite that simple. If the issue is a JS or PHP conflict, then I agree that’s generally a good way to identify the culprit.

A CSS conflict isn’t necessarily indicative of a broken theme or plugin, though. That being said, I assume when you ask if “functionality” is broken, you’re not referring to styling, only to functional code – however, I don’t think the average buyer necessarily makes that distinction – so I think there may be a bit of a disconnect here, and that was really my point after reading this thread

My suggestion would be to contact the author of the plugin once more. If there will be no result, ask Envato for a refund. Since every plugin should work with every theme (at least it should have proper functionality in the backend), this means that either theme author or plugin author are wrong.
