Theft is a problem anyone in business faces, and I think it’s important how others in business protect their product. In retail, in the USA, they have scanners at the exits of stores that go off if a tag hasn’t been scanned. Software has product keys to help with piracy. Las Vegas has all the security cameras, and people watching. For every 100 people that are honest and don’t steal property, intellectual or physical, there is a small percent that will. Our jobs as creators is to find a way that protects us from the very small percent, without hurting the majority. There is fingerprinting systems out there for music that can do it, but a lot of that costs money and it differently costs time to set it all up.
My personal choice has been to always upload music with a watermark. For me it’s a quick and easy fix. It doesn’t stop some people from using it with a watermark and for that I think us composers, especially the ones that do this for a living, need to be very vigilant and watch each others backs. We have to stick together and make sure that as a creative community we say it’s not ok to steal from us. It’s hard enough as it is making a living with music, it’s even harder when the few bucks we need to live on is stolen from us.
