Thanks Hue, and agreed! Definitely frustrating.
Well your items have been here at a time when (i assume) less over saturation than currently and sales were better, so that helps .
Yes and no. I have an item, that was very original, that I put up earlier this year that has been selling extremely well. Although, I’m not really sure how your comment relates to peoples items (including my own) being copied. Please understand, that this post was in no way meant to point out that my items sell well, but to point out that some of them have been copied to the point where I would almost think that I myself designed them.
First let me say, I have been inspired by many of your designs and maybe you can even see certain inspirations come out in my work. I think that is natural, we are all inspired by someone, and we use that inspiration and turn it into something of our own.
Without calling anybody out directly, I have noticed that if I search for items with keywords related to some of my items, I find things that I feel are blatant copies of my work. All the way to the point where the name of the item, the overall look, the tiny elements such as divider lines, all the way to the tag descriptions are almost exact copies. I’m not sure how I feel about this. Someone said that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”. Sometimes I feel that way, sometimes I get a little mad because I feel that these items can be taking away from my sales.
I do not want to call myself a trendsetter, because I have a hard time bragging on myself, but I have had many ideas for items that I was the first to post to GR. I searched GR and didn’t find a single item, then after mine was approved and sales were popular, I started seeing a huge influx of similar items appear. I’m fine with that. I think that’s natural, and if I see something that you have created sell well, I may create a similar product. Sometimes I may see something and think to myself, I can create a better version of that and probably do good with sales, and I run with the idea, but I will put my own twist on it, and try to make sure it doesn’t look at all like anyone else’s item.
So with that, I ask: Have you ever found something that you just knew for sure was a copy of your work? How did you handle it?
I guess the only reason I don’t get to upset about it, is because out of almost all of those items, mine seem to have the most sales!
Your item looks really good. Good luck with sales. The only thing I can suggest: You have quite a few spelling errors on the graphic and in your description below the graphic. I would tidy that up so you don’t lose any potential buyers.
I don’t have any holiday items in my portfolio. I think in order for a holiday item to sell well it has to be very unique. Unfortunately I haven’t come up with anything that I feel qualifies to do that.
I will say that, in general, the way that we used to earn money on here has changed. There are so many new authors, good ones too. The money is being divided up amongst more authors, as stated by someone else. This will only get worse. This does not effect Envato, because they still get their commission regardless of who the sale comes from. The more authors there are, the more items there will be for sale, which means more money for Envato. I remember about a year and a half ago, when one of my items was approved, I could have 10 or 15 sales before it even made it off of the first page. Now I see beautiful flyers that go weeks with only a few sales.
Things will never go back to the way they were. We have to adapt.
Sales are definitely slower for me this month. I’ve actually had multiple times where I’ve gone two or three days with no sales this month. That’s never happened before.
I guess I never really realized how good of a first month I had.
June 2011 73 Sales $154.00
I really need to put up more items though.
www.m13.com has good prices.
I hear you Wok. When I first started uploading files, they always got approved. Some of them have sold over 300 times. Seems like lately all of my files get rejected. It can be very discouraging. I have a number of files that are just sitting on my computer because they were rejected and the season or holiday for which they were created has now passed. I guess I’ll try to resubmit them next year when it comes around again.
I can say, the quality has definitely gone up on Graphic River, so I understand why more items are rejected. I just can’t stand when one of my items gets rejected, and then I see a similar item get approved that, in my opinion, was not as good as mine.
I remember at one point, I thought to myself “Man, I’m going to upload a template every day! I’ll make a killing”! Now I upload one like every 3 months lol.
