Ok, I realized why some of you are so worked up. Cos I’m posting in the Item Requests section!
Should have been somewhere else. If mods would be kind enough to move wherever deemed fit.
My suggestion. Keep the ideas simple guys. Don’t get too stressed up that it has to be a full blown business. Whatever that themeforest currently don’t have is already a good idea.
As simple as that
This thread wasn’t intended to be a debate what works, what doesnt. We’re drifting here.
Most buyers here come because it’s cheap to test their blog, online store, whatever ideas. Period. Otherwise they will take the money to a dev studio. They came here to fail fast often.
The purpose of this thread is to generate ideas for new innovative models instead of just creating ANOTHER theme. It creates value to the theme. Let’s be constructive here guys.
If you are still going to argue about N reasons why it’s not feasible, I urge you to rethink before hitting the Post button. I didn’t say “I…..” want you to create those ideas here. They were just examples you help with brainstorming. No one set any rules here.
Wordpress was meant for blogging. I already see support ticketing, travel booking, forums, marketplace, job/business directories, etc solutions here.
Subscription Based: By Envato licensing, you’d only be able to sell this on an extended license, so every sale would have to be $2k+
Not the theme being subscription but the theme’s ability to allow owners to sell products and services on subscription basis. eg. Scheduled cleaning services, Birchbox, scheduled car pool etc
Thanks again, if there’s something I’d love to see more of, it’s “app themes” themes which really push CMS’ way beyond what they were intended for, see the live chat theme by Chris Mooney, that’s a great example of this.
I’ve seen it, gives it a zendesk feel. This is exactly where my post was heading.
I see a lot of you assume it has to be swanky, rock star, 5000 google engineer kind of model/theme. Keep your minds open, it’s supposed to be idea generation. I’m just like any entrepreneur out there on the street sitting on the other side of the fence, authors.
We are doing website / ecommerce themes here that priced around 50$, you suggest us to create a ready platforms on which you will then create your company, saving tens of thousands on development?
How many people want the create a “Real world sports betting”, “Simple UE friendly courier delivery booking with tracking number”? I don’t think much enough. And the author will spend much more time (and if he have enough programming skills) on developing something like this, and have a risk to sell 100-300 licenses only.Thank you for your ideas, I agree that there are not enough app or niche themes – that is the right way to move for the authors. But these exact your ideas sound more like a “ready online businesses”, they take many months and teams of people to develop properly, otherwise you will get something looking like what you need, but not working.
You can go ahead and create more CMS/one-page themes no one is stopping you
New theme revenue models
Having browsed through themeforest several times over the years, I feel frustrated there aren’t new themes that are build with new ecommerce models in mind. It’s always the same Wordpress directory listing, news publication, hotel bookings or eCommerce traditional product retailing.
There are some innovative models from Wordpress themes like digital marketplace, job sites, crowdfunding but are very limited. (can count with my fingers)
Instead of building the next “nicer” Wordpress or eCommerce theme, consider one with an innovative revenue model never seen before. Here are some examples currently not found at themeforest:
This might be helpful although innovative breakthrough models would be most ideal:
You may ask, if I can create myself, why don’t I run that innovative model myself? Here’s why:
Let the entrepreneurs out there take the risk by trying your theme. And not to forget, the innovative new theme you created could be used by a theme buyer differently from the initial way you intended which you would never have thought of in the first place.
Ideas contributors out there: Add your theme ideas here and I will compile here at the top

Envato won’t bother.
I was the one who restarted this thread quite sometime ago and look where it got to now?
Envato is TOO BIG to fail so they won’t consider anything unless it makes them more profits.
Too proud to listen.
the type of messages above are semi spam messages.
Is always someone who show up, post this outrageous message about how envato is all evil and he will not purchase anything anymore.
I’m quit sure is the same guy showing up at intervals. Not to minimize the problem off course but if I look at my statement, I can see buyers purchasing projects that cost 20$ (perfect for deposit) and they pay 22$.
You are “quite” sure. Any statistics to back? Another marketplace seller trying to campaign against abolishing $2 “fees”.
I have followed this thread long enough to tell.
Oh wait, the sellers are afraid the “fees” starts eating into their profits one day if the payment rules start changing against their favor.
But hey, the king decides who he feeds. I see some things I don’t like, i just take my money else where
After 21 days, an old thread is being dug out by yet another disgruntled buyer. Just proves 1 point.
Envato still fails to listen to it’s community, ignoring our pleas to remove surcharge.
I just looked into this, I may be wrong as I haven’t got all day.
4d. Sellers may not charge a surcharge for accepting PayPal as a payment method.
PayPal is an eBay company, and this restriction is quite clear.
Section 4.2 including 4d is for eBay sellers only.It does not apply to Envato.
Erm, where do you get this idea from?
I’m guessing you are new to the credit card and payment processing industry. Payment processors will never want merchants to separate payment acceptance cost with the product cost. This is a PR thing and it’s against processors/card associations interest to have merchant separate processing cost to consumer. It makes them look “bad”. Let me know when you find a restaurant that includes “Payment Surcharges” in their receipt.
It has nothing to do with Paypal being singled out as a payment operator but rather an added benefit for Paypal users who can now buy that same item without paying a $20 deposit. I’m not seeing anything wrong with this picture.
If you really don’t want to incur the $2 fee, the whole point of this aged thread, then say so. Do not hide behind Paypal’s TOS.
Again, yet another seller trying to paint the beautiful Picasso picture that Envato is doing us a “favour” by charging us $2 “surcharge” and allowing us to buy without depositing $20.
Another note: It’s quite amazing how Evanto staffs choose to watch and hoping this thread goes away so they won’t have to deal with it.
