Hi Dream-Theme and sorry for invading your topic, but KingDog got trigger finger happy and locked the other thread (despite being kindly asked not to) and pointed to this one in order to “keep it centralized”. My letter is my letter and represents my opinions and views and I had and have no reason to use Dream-Theme’s topic and their own letter to present mine.

I will have to disagreed with this attitude and King Dog, if you read this I will kindly ask you to reopen the thread. It’s a bad practice. I am sorry but you guys have enough staff to centralize the info yourself and I don’t need to invade Dream-Theme’s topic with what I had to say.

It once again looks like you’re locking inconvenient threads so that people don’t get to keep them alive and they get lost in a few hours. Shady at least and one of the reasons I posted my letter on Medium, so that it’s in a public place where you can’t do more “crowd control and topic locking”.

Want to lock it? FINE by me, but don’t bury it. You want to play fair? Lock it and make it sticky.

We can talk wherever you want, on whatever topic, but DO NOT bury the letter. Exercise a little transparency and care for the people that do give enough of a damn about this marketplace’s future to go through the struggle to give you decent feedback.

Until you reconsider the lock or make the topic sticky, i will continue the discussion here and re-post the letter as a reply here.

After the latest (last months) developments on the Envato marketplaces I wanted to take the time and digest the whole state of the marketplace today. Not saying that my views are those of everyone here. They represent me and the people I collaborate with and our views on issues which I noticed to find common ground with many other authors. I wrote them down in a post on Medium which I’d like to share with you the authors, Envato staff and whoever else would like to have a read (8 min read according to Medium)

An Open Letter to Envato – An author’s views on current and forthcoming marketplace issues.

Thank you for taking the time to read through and looking forward to reactions.

Regards, Alex

Looking forward to a decent reaction to that letter instead of a lock-and-cover-up.

Alex

I’ve requested a staff reply for this one ;)

+1 Also let’s keep this thread clean for Dream-Theme. Only use +1 with a small comment and all other comments can go into the main thread. Thanks Dream-Theme for heading this up :)
I thought you said yesterday that “this is a great move for all involved”.
Well, my first reaction was “Mandatory support? Ah, OK – we do it anyway”. That was before I started to think about long-term consequences.

Haha, mine was ‘Oh crap! I think I’ve made a wrong decision… I just quit my job to become full time plugin author and handle my time freely.’

I guess I can’t have much free time then, when this mandatory thingy is already up!
That’s exactly what I’m talking about. In short-term, for authors with dedicated support teams (including us) it’s, “Ah, OK” for solo authors it’s “Oh crap!”. But IMO in long-term perspective this will hurt everyone: authors, buyers and Envato.

Totally hurt us solo authors, specially the new ones. I guess this already hurts Envato on my perspective. As for my side I’m starting to lose trust on there decision making, especially they are always pointing that we are a community, but now I don’t feel like it anymore.

From my perspective I can clearly see how this change can help, but help Envato, to grow and to make profit.

To sum up:

after 1 of december we will have:

1.) thousands of items that are not available elsewhere 2.) one of the lowest prices on the market 3.) life-time updates 4.) 6 months of free support with response time under 72h ( I love this part! ;) )

Who can resist to that offer?

Does this change will help authors or buyers? No. It will only bring more confusion and problems for both sides.

Buyers would assume that they have purchased full service – microstock item + premium support. This will lead to bigger amount of requests of support for every author.

Refusal of support will end up just with higher number of:

1.) request of refunds 2.) 1 star ratings 3.) unhappy clients

Some of the buyers could assume, that by buying “support packages” they will receive extended support, refusal of support in this case will also bring request of refunds for support package.

Support is a service and we don’t sell services here from this what I know, this is not Envato Studio or am I missed something? :)

Support is just an addition, yes, important addition (for both buyers and authors), but each author chose the way in which support their own products. This is clearly stated in the “support” tab, you can move this information to the item page, so the buyers are fully aware, of what kind of support they can get from author after purchase.

You will not find a common solution for all authors, and forcing authors to provide mandatory support under your conditions is probably one of the worst solutions.

If you really want to make this change, you should change the whole sales model to a subscription model. Single purchase of the product license + 12 months access to updates and bug fixes. This solution also has its drawbacks, but it is much better that than this, what you have proposed here, at least in a long run.

Sorry guys, +1 for an Opt-out option at least.

Maybe it’s time know who those:

stewboon quote: “We worked with a number of our elite authors (including data from their support systems) to understand all of the data points you mentioned in coming up with this plan.”

Most the elite and power elite authors have already posted their thoughts regarding upcoming changes.

+1, I hope that will be enough percentage to get concrete decision for 4,250,427 community members

I wonder why Envato doesn’t have an authors’ interest group comprising of Elite and Power Elite authors, who they consult about big changes like this.

As far as I remember on the @collis thread, they said that they’ve worked on some elite authors : http://codecanyon.net/forums/thread/important-changes-to-item-support/140218?page=3#1103558 . Seems devious to me now :(

Yeah, not a fan myself either. Old ones were classier, less bland looking.
