Not sure if it was mentioned in the recent search improvements thread (I can’t find it) but I just saw this new addition to the search feature:

Hi res version

Great idea, I regularly try to search for users hoping one of their items pops up.

Not sure if it could be opened up to abuse though, for example if people register names like powerpoint templates, layer styles etc and gain unfair advantage?

Either way, nice to see little features like this appearing across the marketplaces. Keep them coming :)

I’m sitting with a glass of lagavulin and pondering

I know it’s a little off-topic, but I just wanted to compliment you on your excellent taste. Lagavulin is my favourite dram. particularly the Distiller’s Edition.

Ahem, if a 25yo bottle I’m going to take some credit for my Grandad’s work here. 8-) Is there a badge for that?

Looks way too complicated for me.

Especially when I already know the correct shortcuts.

Short cut vs additional oversized keyboard = Nay from me

author branded iFrames are especially for Referrals (as you already know)

This is true, but it doesn’t help when the user it live previewing via Themeforest (as the cookie is already placed).

And yes, some themes have an incredibly slow load time on their own.

Life is too short to safe remove USBs, right? :)
Is that when you have to waste time clicking eject? :P

The faster pages load, the better your conversion rate is. Period.

I’m pretty sure Envato recently posted an article somewhere about improving images to reduce load time, but here are some facts and figures to make the point:

Taken from Globaldots:

  • For every 1 second of improvement [Walmart] experienced up to a 2% increase in conversions
  • For every 100 ms of improvement [on Walmart’s website], they grew incremental revenue by up to 1%
  • Shopzilla speeded up average page load time from 6 seconds to 1.2 seconds, and increased revenue by 12% and page views by 25%
  • Amazon increased revenue by 1% for every 100ms of improvement (same as Walmart).
  • Yahoo increased traffic by 9% for every 400ms of improvement.
  • Mozilla got 60 million more Firefox downloads per year, by making their pages 2.2 seconds faster

Taken from Econsultancy:

  • Stats from the Aberdeen Group show that a one second delay in page load time equals 11% fewer page views, a 16% decrease in customer satisfaction, and 7% loss in conversions.
  • Nearly half of web users expect a site to load in 2 seconds or less, and they tend to abandon a site that isn’t loaded within 3 seconds
  • 79% of web shoppers who have trouble with web site performance say they won’t return to the site to buy again and around 44% of them would tell a friend if they had a poor experience shopping online.

Now, my reason for this thread:

[disclaimer]This is all in my own opinion[/disclaimer]

I have a rather slow and often intermittent internet connection, so I am admittedly at a disadvantage to begin with.

Recently I have been trying to do a little more shopping than usual on Themeforest, which of course on top of searching TF for themes, then involves viewing lots of previews.

This is a personal opinion, but when I view a theme preview, I like to close the iframe header bar to see the theme in all it’s glory – to see it exactly how it will look when I use it in my projects.

Closing the Themeforest iframe means the website has to load again. It’s frustrating a little, especially on a slow connection.

Further amplifying that frustration is when another header bar pops up with the Author’s branding. It means I’m having to load theme previews two or three times just to see what the theme looks like without added vanity branding (which also cramps the screen).

Then, there’s the added annoyance of clicking “close” on the ThemeForest branded iframe, only to have it automatically reload JUST AS I CLICK to the Author’s own iframe, which has the controls the opposite way round, so I end up clicking “close” but instead click on their logo and get redirected to their personal page or ThemeForest profile.

So I have to go back to the theme’s page, click live view and wait around for it to automatically reload -then I can safely close the iframe and stay on the theme I want to see.

[breathes]

The question:

  • Does having an Author branded iframe around items improve sales? Or is it just for vanity?
  • Same question goes to Themeforest

If it’s not been done already, it would be very interesting to see Envato test live previews without the faffing around of these (imo vanity) iframes and see if it improves conversion rates.

After all, the live previews _blank so anyone smart enough to be using custom WP themes should also be smart enough to realise they need only close the window to return to the purchase page.
