If you take a look at the popular list for WordPress you’ll see the themes that are killing it in sales include a TON of shortcodes. If that’s what buyers want that’s what you should supply them, at the end of the day this is a business. If you don’t supply what they want, then most likely you’re going to see little to no sales at the end of the day.
without shortcode , the theme look poor!
let imagine that the day buyer buy your theme without shortcode , then he found that he can’t build some special content/elements in his post/pages like blockquote,columns,tab,highlight,dropcap…ect then he will search for some free shortcode or even primium shortcode plugins.
then he can insert into the theme but it may not happy with current theme .
if the buyer is a non-tech person then it’s a hard try for him. after all trying he can’t get everything work perfect! then he may choose another theme and list you as backlist

Little-Neko said$200 is alot of money??? I’m in Vietnam , a poor country but $200 / wordpress theme is still low price. I’m working as freelancer and I got 1-2k $ per month. In my country the coder salary could be from $250 -> $1000 . And there are very little coder have salary < $500 can do a good wordpress theme!
Valid is not enough… testing/debugging/browser compatibility/security check, is a big part of a serious web coder job. Only experienced coders will do it fast. And experience has a price.However, in some countries, 200$ can be a lot of money…

you will get what you pay for. $300 for psd->wordpress then you will get a poor wordpress theme and it will not have enough features to approve in themeforest for sure!

portfolio is too much theme for now . I think the good type theme for now is branding & company.

too much items and the same designs, many of new authors have small sales may give up.

psd file is good for coder who can’t have good design and maybe it will not be use in wordpress since there are too much wordpress theme have cheap price. the cost to convert psd -> html -> wordpress could be more than $500.

I think unique does not mean better. Unique is different than other , it does not mean it better than other and great graphic.
There are alot of design that unique but it could be too old and useful in <2008 , not today when the webdesign is increase quality too much and have many trend …
