Hi everyone!

Support frequently gets refund requests from WordPress theme buyers who believe that the theme which they have purchased is broken because they get a “Broken Theme/Stylesheet Missing WordPress” error when uploading or activating the theme on their WordPress installation.

These errors generally occur because the theme has been installed incorrectly.

Our moderator & support extraordinaire Drew (CreatingDrew) has created a really helpful screencast & article which clearly & simply explains how to solve this problem if you’re having problems.

You can find the full article & screencast here: http://wiki.envato.com/buying/support-buying/solving-broken-theme-issues/

Share the news with your buyers if you’re an author! :-)

I can’t find this video anymore. I have linked the buyers for years to that video but now it’s gone. Could anyone please point me to its location ?

Nothing lasts forever. ActiveDen was a fantastic place to make money, many people did and later we all know what happened; for all those who thinks TF will bring them infinite money-time, be ready for surprises. Nothing new, anyway, happens to almost anything on life. Where money is, there always be crowds, once the money ends, crowd will move to other place. More files, even not top notch, means more money to Envato. Nothing wrong with it.

If they did this just for the money, then they just cut the branch under their own feet – selling wordpress themes is still a big cash cow and with themeforest oversaturated and authors pulling away, there is no other Envato marketplace to go to sell them, so they are the ones who are losing most.

And if you need to bring users from outside to sell themes here, what’s the point of ThemeForest then?

This.

It will be very interesting to learn why the quality bar was lowered in the first place. Was it Envato felt that it discouraged new authors with the high standards and they were thinking that with no “new blood” the marketplaces will die ? Or they just went for quantity over quality trying to get more cash ?

I’m sorry but What kind of theme(40$) you are discussing?

You cannot provide names/links, but i’m pretty sure which theme @duotive and @rvision have in mind.

Price 40$ probably because author can change from basic 35$?

I had a look at the theme, probably the author asked to have it priced at $40 right from the start for the reason that it has lots of features. Back in the past there were a couple of themes priced at $40 right from the start(not those with bbpress) but the reviewers never wanted to say what you will have to do to make to increase your theme price from $35 to $40. However I suppose that if you come up with lots of features / shortcodes and ask to have it priced at $40 when you submit / update it, you might have a chance.

Recently, we lower the standards for PSD category and (slightly) on other categories. But, we do have a few valid reasons behind this.
Could you share any of this reasons? It seems that this new psd files have rather poor sales (generally this category is not so popular). Do you know maybe if it was ever considered to move PSD category to Graphicriver?

+1 for the graphic river move – doesn’t make sense for them to be on here anymore anyways….

And I doubt anyone established will be able to make any remarks to the state of the marketplace acceptance rates and quality without being bashed as wanting a monopoly – that’s not the reason, as I stated in the thread from a week or so ago, the fact is that average earnings will drop due to sheer numbers and that will cause the more professional author (new or old) to go elsewhere as it simply becomes unprofitable to create and sell here – heaven knows we have been screaming for price increases for ever and still nothing….

It’s cool, as the tide over the past few months has changed and I see DAILY other authors trying alternative routes for sales and different marketplaces… such a shame, but as these marketplaces have grown the infrastructure and marketing doesn’t seem to of reflected this, especially in organization and increases in processes seems to of gotten worse.

Jonathan

Maybe it’s time to have a dedicated marketplace for wordpress themes only. This will solve for a temporary period the oversaturation of the marketplace with so many new approved items per day.

I am not sure what is better though: themeforest to be the marketplace for wordpress themes and create a new marketplace for html / email / landing pages or vice versa – html / email / landing = themeforest and come up with something like wordpressforest = marketplace for wordpress themes only.

This is just a suggestion really – it might be a bad one or a good one, don’t know for sure. However, the biggest problem is that Envato is just so SLOW in taking a decision and make it happen.

The “price increases” thread was created by Jonathan 2 MONTHS ago already and kept staying on the first page for good period of time and still nothing.

The way I see things this might be the beginning of decline for themeforest / envato, mainly because they fail to act fast enough to fix the ongoing problems the marketplaces are confronting.

The more people see what you can achieve here, the more will give their best to get their designs online. The bar is rising, and will continue to do so. I think the reviewers do a great job in deciding what deserves to be sold here – and that’s more and more in terms of quantity AND quality. All new items are great. So where to say NAY ?
Bullshit. Take a look at some new PSDs (which WAS “hardest to get into”). At this point I see that reviewing standards gone extremely low. I miss those glorious days when grass was greener, trees were taller and Kailoon and other guys from reviewing team were pushing authors to do their BEST . I’m personally very grateful for that. Nowadays many new authors are making clean-minimal-responsive-as-other-500-themes. That’s quite disappointing :(

The so called “clean-minimal-responsive-as-other-500-themes” is what sells best nowadays, so it’s more than obvious why so many authors create such themes. Keep in mind that many authors make a living out of this thing and are not here just for the sake of art. So it’s normal to try to create over and over again what keeps selling best. If the demand for minimal responsive business themes wouldn’t be so high, I’m sure we wouldn’t have so many themes like this around. It’s a trend that ultimately will fade away and once the demand will start dropping, the offer will start dropping too.

Maybe authors go simply crazy about the stupid questions? I mean, before buying something You should at leat know WHAT you’re buying, shouldn’t you? For example, people buy a WordPress theme and complain about not working on WordPress.com. WTF ? I ignore such requests completely. Or, people ask why WordPress says it misses the stylesheet (too lazy to unzip once more, guys?). This is bullshit. Don’t buy something if You don’t know what You’re buying, that easy. As long as support requests make sense, they’re not a problem, but buyers should think and do some researches before bothering authors with annoying support requests after having purchased a theme for 30-35$, which is somewhat too cheap. Just my 2cents about the support thing. And back to topic: Is it just me having the impression or has been the amount of approved items reduced dramatically the last two days, maybe as a reaction for this thread? :O

About unzipping, they just don’t know, it’s not about being lazy. When I released my latest theme back 2 months ago, I was surprised by the number of clients saying the installation fails only because they didn’t unzip. And even though I have answered the question lots of time, every now and then someone will come with this question. They simply don’t know how the archive they purchase is structured.

About the impression from your last paragraph, I suppose not unfortunately – it’s just the weekend and reviewers usually don’t work / work less Saturday and Sunday. It’s always a bit more quiet around here in weekends…
