Thank you for this advice, which worked. Now I know that ThemeForest does this a little differently than many other template vendors, whose product uploads directly from the zip file. One suggestion for the folks at ThemeForest if they’re monitoring forums … if buyers do make this mistake often, then perhaps more clarity at the point of purchase would be helpful?

Karma theme will not install on WordPress 3.31. I purchased the theme today and made four attempts to upload the zipped theme file to the site. Each time it produces a WordPress failure notice with the words “Are you sure you want to to this? Try again.” I get the same result each time. I used two different browsers just to be sure the problem wasn’t there.
I have uploaded many WP themes in the past, and other themes do install correctly on this site, www.teasilver.com. How can I successfully load the Karma theme?
