not much so far, but a few things that i liked are the t-shirts i have created so far. I entered some contests at DesignByHumans…lots of fun over there, but unfortunely none of my creations got printed
Then there was a contest open by Quiksilver and Tony Hawk, here are a few entries i sent:
Out of this created a t-shirt for the guys at WooThemes for their trip to Future of Web Design 2009 conference in London. I named the artwork “Tableless”...the details URL : http://www.woothemes.com/2009/03/wootees-another-woocontest
My last passion are my birds…got colorful budgies. My flock gets bigger, right now there are about 60 pairs and planing to rise up to 100 this year
DesignByHumans (http://designbyhumans.com) can be a good company to partner with when it comes to quality printing, shipping and customer support. Got several t-shirts from them, print quality and customer support rocks…no hassle. Maybe someone from staff can talk to the guys at DBH to see if there is some way to partnership. Example, envato can provide the designs, and DBH print and process orders+shipping.
An idea to get authors involved…maybe run a t-shirt design competition and best 3 designs get printed.
LOL , nice…cant wait to see this thread also locked
By the way, I saw that there was some concern over pricing and that it was too low. These are non-exclusive designs so the money will build with quantity. We’d really love to have an exclusive option as well, but we’re a ways away from that.
Lance, due to the nature of the product (logo template), there will be no way “the money will build with quantity”, hence, there will be no quantity. I dont believe even the best logo item will make more than 10 sales at all. In that case, how the author will be able to earn back the efforts with a few sales of $10 logo template? Also, i think we sometimes mix-up things and forget what we are actually selling…visual communication designers (graphic, web, illustration, etc) sell two things – ideas and time. Considering the number of purchases a logo template may reach, i’m thinking, why spend my time and provide my ideas for $10…is it really worth?...are ideas today that cheap?
The only way i see logo category function is, offer only 1 time purchase, basically enable only the exclusive licence for logo items and make sure the pricing is right. This way you as envato, you wont risk your reputation, and you may add another ”+” to the company’s sucessful projects. $10 logo templates will not make bigg difference at envato’s bank, but it can hurt envato’s reputation as a whole and you may lose not only some good authors, but also ongoing buyers.
I’m really excited to see how many people are excited about the category.
Trust me, me personaly i’m not excited and from the comments i can see many others are not excited to. I think when you guys have a meeting next time, you should stop guessing how much money you can put with this new category into envato’s bank and drop the calcultators…then try to think and plan this category from author point of view…then i am sure you will add some value to this idea
this was really needed, congrats to all authors with flyer templates in their portfolios…i assume with this upgrade, we will now dive into flyers fury again…cant wait to see the homepage stuffed with flyer templates
It looks like many authors have no understanding of brand identity defination. A logo is not only a part of identity, but is the major element of a barnd. Thats why a logo template cannot be handled as any other stock item such as wordpress, flash, html or print template.
TF or FD templates has also a functionality build into them, which logo templates doesnt have. A licence of wordpress template and a licence of logo template are 2 very different things. Lets have a look at themeforest wp themes, many of them look same but have different features…or look different but have same functionality right? Now lets translate this into logo templates…there you will look for real uniqueness and no similarity between 2 logo templates. 1 logo template cant be similar to another due to its visual meaning, hence has no “features” or “functionality” where reviewers can define the item quality and decide on approvals. Logo template will be approved if is only unique to the other logo templates already in the library.
Lets see editing options, you can very easy make a print template (like party flyer) look different by simply changing the photo, but the same doesnt apply for a logo template. You would buy a logo template where you would want to change maximum the color of the text or colors in the icon part, or maybe even the type face used… other wise it has no sense to buy the logo template.
Reading some comments above, they sound like it is very OK to use the apple icon of “apple” and type behind it “dapple” and submit as a logo template. Or how about using the leaf icon of envato and type behind it “benvato” and expect the reviewers approve it?
A wordpress theme can be sold 1000s of times, we have the examples at TF, and there are authors with silver badge with a single item. But i wonder if this will be possible witha logo template. Considering the usage area of logo, a very good and quality logo may get maximum 10 purchases and thats it, this file will die in the GR archives. Site templates and logo templates are 2 different things…lets understand that first.
Guys, logo templates category is something envato need to think more than twice before diving into this. There are many things to consider starting with the licence part for logo templates. Alone usage of type face (fonts) will require special permissions, as using font styles in logo templates is different than stuffing cufon fonts into wp theme.
Then the price range for logo templates, anything between $100-$400 can be acceptable price for an logo templates authors, but $10-$40 is a contempt for authors.
But as some authors specified above, if is only about the icon part in a logo (clipart), there is no need for a new category…post everything into the vectors category and the buyers can look for cliparts for their logos at this category…then add their text behind or under the clipart…booom, there is the magic, a new logo born .
...and sory for the long post LOL .
this kind of conversations actually has a meaning, they appear when the client doesnt have the necessary funds on the table to release them…actually he (your client) wants to tell you; “Yeah thats fine and everything looks good, but i dont have the money to pay you rign now”
...so it is why such no-sense conversations appear, atleast is what i am guessing…or you meet this time a real moron LOL .
This week RypeArts become featured author, but he only have 1 item and still orange paw. I still can accept if his item become featured item. Honestly, I also want to be featured, not only me but there are lots of great author with lots of item in GR also want to be featured . And today GR staff featured someone who are gave small contribution in GR. ? Do you think it’s fair?
RypeArts is Ryan Putnam....* throws petrol on the fire and runs away *
Ryan Putnam runs Vectips.
Vectips is an Envato advertiser (currently running a tuts+ ad).
Yes, I know. Envato obviously give special treatment to their friend just like they did to GoMedia which is their partner and not appreciate author who helped GR become of popular marketplace.
@Survivorhaha, now I don’t care anymore. We need to say something because this is our rights as an author in Marketplace.
needed to put my LOLz on this
mate, you (just like me), we both will never get featured…but guess why? ...ummm, blacklist? Why not, trust me i am in since long time …but i must tell you, it is not bad to have a few guys not smarming at envato…there must be Someone to say the truth, and if that costs “never get featured’, i am not giving a hot about it
...envato for dudes!
The business is evolving, and no matter if we like or dislike where is it going, we need to adapt to survive.
i must agree with many things you say, but the last sentence ...just wait untill all $10 logo ballers arrive at GR from 99designs and some freelancing marketplaces (alone Freelancer.com has over 50K logo designers), i bet you would want to find a way to very fast edit the last sentece LOL . “to adapt”...this will be the hard part when you need to compete with providers from countries where $10 is huge money, and as you already may know, these guys are damn good at “conviencing the client” for 10 dollar logo.
I personaly dont want GR to become one of these places, hence is the reason why i leave elance, freelancer, guru and other freelance marketplaces.
