Making themes for themeforest isn’t that fun anymore as it used to be. We’re bound by rules, rules and rules. Wondering who’s running themeforest, Matt or Collis?

Due to those guidelines it’s almost impossible to create the things we want to create for our customers. And then try to update your older themes to these new guidelines. That’s almost undoable without starting from scratch.

Anybody else experiencing issues with accessing their earnings page? I can access all pages in my profile except the earnings page won’t load.

If your income is over X limit (not sure what it is in Canada) then you would be liable to charge VAT on services you do.

Envato are basically paying your invoice (little more complicated than that but it’s a generic gist of it) so you would be liable to pay VAT on the amount received from Envato e.g.

In the UK our VAT rate is 20%, so for every £100 I earn, I need to put £20 aside for VAT. I charge this to the client so my charge for £100 job would be £100 + VAT which is £120.

In envato’s case, you can’t ask them to pay X+VAT, they pay you what you have earnt so say you earn $1000, you would keep $800 and put $200 aside for tax.

In VAT stuff, I would get an accountant to advise on this as if you do it wrong, you can land yourself a hefty bill. The accountant will be able to advise on the best way to deal with VAT and how to reduce it (legally) e.g. in the UK, we can sign up for a 12% tax rate if we don’t claim back VAT (great if you don’t do a lot of purchases).

Gareth, you don’t have to add extra VAT for when you receive money from Envato. Only when you live in Australia. My Accountant confirmed this as well as the TAX guys and professionals over here. When my VAT has to be filled in there’s a section to enter “Deliveries to countries outside the EU (export)” And you add the money you earned in there and don’t have to pay any VAT taxes on this amount.

Now i am from Holland and if Envato was a German company, or from Belgium then it’s within the EU and i had to fill in a reversed VAT charge.

When Envato was based in the Netherlands then i had to add 21% VAT. But since they are outside the EU i don’t have to ad any VAT.

Doing this for 8 years now with overseas clients and clients outside the EU. And never got any complaint or visit from the government.

I have a business registered in the Netherlands and since Envato is located in Australia ( out of EU ) and Envato sells the themes to the buyers you don’t have to pay any VAT taxes

You do however have to collect your monthly statements and pay your income taxes on the income received from Envato as any business should.

My accountant verified this, but of course Canadian TAX laws could be different.

A site like that will cost you more then 3k at least. So 250 is an insult. But anyway, good luck.

That’s what you get when new functions are added to the themeforest marketplace without discussing these functions or ask for feedback from Authors and Buyers.

And as freshface stated, make sure you always have a help/doc section inside your framework.
