Hi all

My first attempt at a theme was just rejected =( The reviewer commented that it “doesn’t meet the high approval standards we have for the ThemeForest. Files must be well designed and aesthetically pleasing to be accepted”

Fair enough, I’m not about to get discouraged at this stage, but I’m wondering what specifically I should focus on to improve this entry? Is it layout (should I have used the 960 Grid template)? Color choices? Overall style – were there not enough 2.0 gloss highlights and rounded corners (I kid)?

Here are some screenshots:

Comments and suggestions would be much appreciated, because I really don’t know where to start.

i was waiting for a comment and all i can say….i dont see any reason why it was rejected too. it looks different but very good with a lot of details on every single page. to go with 960gd is not needed to get the okay for the release.

it would be informative if this is just a psd, html or a wordpress theme.

if its just a psd, maybe its not documented enough or it needs more optimization.

weeks ago i found out that it helps when you retry it but ask for a different reviewer. but im just a nobody and im sure someone can help you more in your case.

I think you have a strong start. Nice background and layout.

I would recommend working on the main content section. Try to make it stand out a bit more and add some good contrast. Maybe step up your typography a little bit.

I think you are real close though. :)

Definitely a good start, almost there.

Some of the drop shadows and strokes are just far too thick. Tone down that stuff.

The typography seems to be a little off as well, most noticeable on the home page I think.

@markdijkstra, @0703 Thanks for the kind comments, guys! I have to admit I was scratching my head too, but having had no prior experience with Envato, I wasn’t sure if my work was of a good enough quality. Just to confirm, my submission was a PSD template.

@0703 – I included a help file, referring to the template that’s stickied on the forums, so I don’t think that’s the problem (plus the reviewer didn’t mention anything about that). I’m not sure what you mean by optimizing the PSD ?

Below are the reviewer’s full comments. Thanks again for chiming in, guys! It helps to know I wasn’t the only one confused. You prevented me from quitting design altogether, and going to get my Accounting degree ;)

@stylus, @g_gilmore Thanks for the feedback, it’s much appreciated! I’ll take another look at those things – typography in particular is definitely something I’m working to improve in general.

After seeing that it was in fact a PSD , I can understand why it was rejected.

Have a look through the PSD section, you’ll find that almost all of the items are nearly perfect in every aspect of design.

It’s good that typography is what you’re working on, it can take something mediocre to amazing (or, very importantly, poor typography can take a great design down to a mediocre one!).

I think you need to improve on the typography of the template (font-type and color). And you used a little too much drop-shadow.

Will do. With regards to the drop-shadowing, it appears really light on my screen (I try to be careful with shadowing, so was surprised to hear this is an issue), so I’m wondering, is there a specific %-age opacity that would work better, do you think?

Thanks again for everyone’s help – the great community on Envato is one of the major reasons I want in!
