I am a new author on GR. I uploaded an item for reviewing two weeks ago and still got no answer. I had info about this item on my Author Dashbord page since day 5 or 6 and then this block disappeared. For me there is no problem to wait few more days / weeks
check your spam, if the counter disappears, it means that an item has been reviewed. It`s probably rejected, coz you have no items in your portfolio.

Thankyou Alex, you are right, item was reviewed and rejected few days ago, and gmail has put this email in spam!

I had one like yours sitting there four hours and it actually got soft rejected and now it has been an hour since i edited it and still nothing.

Phew: approved and also had 1st sale almost immediately (20 mins after it was approved) – thank god for that – christmas is going to be all good 
Patience everyone, I waited 10 days – I already have my next file ready. But I think I’ll wait til after the holidays to submit, lol
