Took me 30 minutes and I think I got it.

All I want to know is, where is the extra $1 from paypal surcharges going? Almost 60% of my sales were through Paypal. The cumulative difference is huge. Are you trying to hide that in all your philosophical mumbo-jumbo?

Envato is getting greedy. You guys keep adding more and more anti-author changes, and soon you’ll find a straw that will break the camel’s back.

and now envato decided that they are bringing it down to $1 “which is fine”, so now Envato gets their $1 from handling fees, and the authors dont.. so its more like they are offering a better price on the account of Authors.. and i find that a bit frustrating..

is 1$ only for items under 10$. still 2$ for the rest of the items that are priced above 10$ and under 75$ (like the rest of items)

as above is 1$ for items that cost less than 10$ and 2$ for the rest.

it goes to envato accounts.

Based on a 50% commission rate to make it easier:

If 60% of 1000 sales had the extra $2 fee (600 sales), you would have received $600 extra in commission from that old fee.

Now that the item prices have been raised and the fee has been removed, you will receive extra commission on every sale. So if your item has a $2 price increase, and you sell 1000 copies again, you will now be receiving an extra $1000.

So in this example, after the recent price rise and fee removal we’re actually $400 better off.

^ When they increased prices, the reason mentioned was not about this surcharge thing but another. See the reason mentioned in the blog:

As our authors continue to produce some of the highest quality creative work available anywhere online, this price change will help ensure they are able to continue to produce and maintain the best content possible for our community’s creative project needs.

Personally I wouldn’t complain Envato for taking surcharge but it doesn’t show professionalism when their announcements lack clarity and openness. Of course if the surcharge got removed completely in short span, then we can appreciate these steps.

The correct approach would have been to decrease the surcharges from $2 to $1, then it would have been understandable that it is included in the buyer fee and as Authors we are not receiving anything extra.

The current approach seems like Envato is taking away some of the extra money author’s used to get. Has Paypal surcharges increased? If so that would also justify the decrease in commission (in absolute terms).

All in all, I think this could have been promoted better. The “balancing” is confusing at best and insulting to intelligence at worst.

Too much calculation, too much confusion
Conclusion:
Things are clear, Envato vs author: Envato +1 Author -1
The $2 surcharge is now going completely to envato and is not getting split up between the author and envato, like in the past.
Personally, with a single calculation, I will lose about $ 4,200 / year. with this new “Envato More Balanced Market”. Envato strangulate more the authors by this inequitable system.

Thanks! Totally sum it up. The changes will totally reduces every author’s earning. This changes on the marketplace lately makes me wonder if Envato totally valued the authors

For buyers there should be a tiered discount, I don’t see anything there that is useful for buyers, a vast majority will deposit prepaid, I’d say your play on lowering fees without prepaid is any affiliates will lose out as the last time I looked any commission was based on pre deposited funds only, that’s correct right ?

Also for buyers who have bought say over 250-300 items should get a periodical 25% one off voucher so they can stock up and save money. This would create a burst of revenue for both envato and authors, it’s basic marketing. Envato has never really been on the ball for marketing, this only helps envato not many others.

No, affiliates get paid for the first transaction their referrer does e.g.

Tom deposits $50, Affiliate will get $15 (30%)

Tom buys item A which is $50+$2 surcharge, Affiliate will get $15.60

I read all 27 pages of this thread. Maybe after a few months I’ll get used to a new author fee % instead of % of commission rate. But I want to see the item price on my statement page at least. I have 2 accounts and still I didn’t see any new increased item prices. So to not receive my part from $2 surcharge is a step back for my earnings cos such sales are about 40-50% from all sales. The old share system for $2 surcharge was fair enough and can be used with the new math formulas with buyers fee 20% and % authors fee. Just these formulas must be applied to the amount paid ( when there is a sale with $2 surcharge ). There are no significant changes of payment system, maybe only decrease of surcharge to $1 for up to $10 item price. So the reason to not receive our part of surcharge is not connected with current working payment system. I hope the next changes will show us where is the truth.

I like math but these new calculations are too much to be seen on statement page. They are more proper for invoices. Also I think that it’ll be nice if I can see the hour of every sale cos the different time zones of Envato and authors / buyers.

Some people seem to forget that recently all prices of themes and templates were raised so even if you’ll don’t get your part from 2$ surcharge you’ll still earn more
