What happens when an author die

This is the only point that SUPPORT becomes not mandatory.
You must record all possible FAQs for your items :) or hire a clairvoyant to continue support :)

Already did the FAQ thing :)
And After life , it will be enough for any of my customers to call my name three times. ;)

Me too have same doubt, but from buyers point of view. Who will give the support or updates to the theme/plugin?

I stopped supporting for an year and I am still alive :D So this ensures my death wont make any difference for buyers :P

On Topic, also curious to see official answer for the original post!

You’re not buying support or updates – those are extra benefits if the author offers them.

Correct me if I’m wrong. Won’t be there any compatibility issues with the theme or plugin When WordPress updates their version like from 3.6 to 3.7 like that but the plugin or theme not updated?

Item support is completely different from updating the item to match present compatibility. Even without answering buyers, we can still make sure our item’s fitness. This is more of a personal choice of author rather than a policy. (of course this may not be consistent if author dies :D )

Also it is possible that an item can be “Bug free + without support” or “Bug Full + Super support” or somewhere in between. Whatever may be the case, support is NOT mandatory here as long as the item meets the minimum approval criteria.

You know , it’s all related to metaphysics :)
When you care too much about support , your users will never get satisfied and your rating will start to fill with 1 star ratings.
But if you do the opposite , you will have peace, even in the graveyard hahaha ;)
