Someone wants to use one of my fonts for their logo brand name, registering it as a Trademark for their retail products. Under the same logo will come other products too. Since there is no extended licence for a font, what is a reasonable charge for me to design the word for them as a logo, using my font, tweaking it a bit to their specs? I have no idea. Their vague suggestion is that it could be done ‘free’ as part of the rest of the job which was a bespoke pattern for which i charged $60. I’d really appreciate advice here.

Why would you do something for free? You are in my eyes a unique artist and designer who has earned his position through hard work.

In the world where I live, you have to pay for such services.

You have to have at least your normal hourly rate.

Sincerely,

Maybe pick a x percentage of $60 for each logo you’ll create?

I always charge for individualised and bespoke services exactly the amount of time I have to invest.

Unless I see a business opportunity, I want to do a favour, or I think I “owe him one”. That is of course completely up to you to decide. In fact I quite often provide services at lower prices because they are long-standing clients, I think they may become long-standing clients or because I’m happy to help out.

But at the end of the day when you sum up your services to them over a year or two, the time invested has to sum up against the money you made.

Sometimes you have to follow your gut, and sometimes you will be wrong :)

So what do you think: will this be a client you will work with for a long time and it’s worth handing out a favour for? Or is this a one-time request for a valuable service?

Cheers

Chris

Thanks for the all round advice (and for the compliments brandtz). Definitely this is a one-time request, very likely a one-time product despite the glowing visions into the future, and on an all time tiny budget! I quoted the GR logo standard of $29 dollars but they have decided to just type the word in Myriad Pro or something!! Pfffft!!

Charge them what any other designer would charge for logos…don’t cut yourself short! As far them using your font in the logo, that’s great for you as a designer. Isn’t that what you want as a font designer? Someone buying your font and using it publicly?

+! Unfortunately the $4 was outside THIS customer’s budget :) Oh well, sometimes we end up doing a bit of semi-charity work. If i want a sample of the product (umbrella) i have to buy it.
