AE CS3 & CS4 + Alpha Channel Usage

Ok…. looking for someone with a bit more experience than me at using AE.

I am wondering how I can use a separate Quicktime file as the Alpha channel in conjunction with the another Quicktime video?

I have tried applying various Effects to the source movie and selecting the alpha channel movie?! Am I missing something?

Use separate AE Quicktime file as Luma Inverted Matte

Mocarg already pointed out the normal way to do it.

If you would prefer to use an effect on the layer, then the Channel -> Set Matte effect is the way to go, although this really only makes sense if you’re applying the same matte to a lot of different layers (it just saves on a few layers!)
