I noticed the same thing. A workaround is to temporarily put the image you want to use at the top of your marketplace item description first. Then when you go to post your item link, it will be a selectable option.
I also noticed what seems like a bug. If you are an author with a lot of thumbnails and images in the item description, the default preview image may not be among the selectable options.

Yep, I noticed the same bug, I have many thumbnails in my items description, so the preview image is not selectable. 
The only solution is to do what you said, but it is a very boring. The only way is to put the download link in the description
