Also wait for confirmation that the plugins you’re using are compatible with the new version of WordPress.
I’m sure most authors checked their themes when 3.5 RC came out and made fixes if needed but test on a stable release is needed to make sure everything is working as it should. So 1-2 days after a big WP version release is needed for authors to handle everything.

Striking user can update. Striking work with WP 3.5 and user told to update yesterday.
Although in reality not many buyers checks the forums. Which is quite sad.

Message to buyers: If you get an error when updating your theme, it most likely means your theme author done something wrong. You should not need to get confirmation from your theme author that it’s okay to update your copy of WordPress.
why weren’t you testing themes during beta and RC to make sure your themes didnt break?
