Hi Doru,

I don’t live there but i was there for my honeymoon in 2005, so i can share only my opinion of what i think about it and what i hear from people who actually lives there and comes in holidays to Algarve witch is where i live.

If you are looking for a very quiet place to live, then its good :) but at the same time it can be a bit boring (my opinion :) ) . You will find that there’s not much to do there once you´ve seen everything and 1 week is more than enough to see the all island.

Regarding other things like prices you will find that the capital “Funchal” is expensive (Touristic city) you can always go to the interior but hay!!! Even more boring.

Another drawback is if you need to purchase anything like hardware or similar you will spend a lot of cash and will take a lot of time to get things there. Even some suppliers just dont send stuff there.

You are always a 1h distance flight from the continent (Lisboa aero port) which is good.

The beaches at least when i was there were all with stones No sand!!! :) Yea :)

On the other hand if you are looking for a quiet place to live and that is near to everything by car at least you have so many choices. If you look at the Coast of Algarve you may find the east and south coast great and at the same time you are a step from everything. http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parque_Natural_do_Sudoeste_Alentejano_e_Costa_Vicentina

The prices of stuff are more or less the same because these are also touristic areas. More choice though :)

Anyway dont want to lead you into not going to Madeira, try a week of holiday there so you can see how it is :)

PS: Anyone from Madeira dont get me wrong, its only my opinion :) .

Hi Doru! I’ve only been in Madeira as a visitor, so I don’t know how it is to live there.

It has some nice characteristics, great landscapes, good weather all year round, affordable prices, etc.. So for a visit this is great. But I am not sure how it would be to live there. Like Roberto already mentioned, the main island doesn’t have many beaches, since it’s mostly stones and cliffs around, although there are a few artificial ones. In the smaller Island, Porto Santo, the beach is amazing, but it’s a very small, touristic island. Since there is not much going on, if you don’t know people there, I think it can be hard to get to know new people and find stuff to do.

The island has a lot to offer, but you would need a car to get around. The landscapes are nice, and if you like to hike there are some cool places. So if you’re up for a relaxed life, I’m sure you could find some spot in a village to just enjoy nature and work :)

But like Roberto said, mainland Portugal it’s probably also a place to consider.

If you want to know anything more in particular let us know! Hopefully a ‘Madeirense’ will also drop by to give his opinion on how it is to live there.

Cheers

Thank You all for the replies. Relaxed life is great :) at least for a year or two. A great city as Rome have a lot of crazy people and stressful situations. I may have enough of this.

thank you that’s good information. rent doesn’t look so high, here is 600 to 800 or more.

I’ve looked at some websites and they had listed some apartments with ocean view at 110.000 euros. Is that realistic?
