Im just curious, does anyone here make templates or items for the Envato “mothership” full time?

Ive seen a few users with badges indicating they are making a reasonable income. I do mine for fun really, upload them and see what happens, but I would imagine its a bit dicey doing it full time.

I work as a freelancer full time from home but when I get enough themes going here at ThemeForest I’d like to move into building them full time with some freelance on the side.

Sales are surprisingly steady for themes/templates so it’s just a matter of getting enough created and up for sale to generate a full time income. As with any freelance type work though, it’s always best not to put all your eggs in one basket. :)

I’m curious about some of the authors over at Flashden though. Some of those guys have made quite a bit.

I wouldn’t have thought you’d make enough money selling on TF, maybe if you could get good exposure here you could go creeping to TemplateMonster but I find it hard to believe it’s worth the hours you have to put in, I mean let’s say you get $10 for selling a template and sell it 10times = $100. Even if it was just a PSD that would have to take you at least 10hours to build = $10 an hour (£5 here in UK). I could work in Burger King for £6.50 !

It really just depends on how bad you want it. Sure, for the first 6 months or year it probably wouldn’t give you the return you might think you deserve but the way I see it is I get to work at home and decide what I want to do when I want to do it. Plus, when you’ve got 40 templates up for sale, which are pulling in maybe $2500 a month. You don’t have to do anything, it’s a passive income. Now that is sweet! :D

If you’re more interested in an immediate return on your work, this probably would be your cup of tea. It’s still definitely great for developing your portfolio, networking and getting tons of exposure though.

Oh yeah, keep in mind you could get 10 sales each month for 12 months (and more). That’s 120 sales at $10 each, brings you $1200 a year for just one template. Build 10 templates that each bring in that much and you’ve got $12,000. So figure you need $2k per month minimum for income, build 20 or more templates (very easily possible within 6 months). That’s passive income! Then just keep building templates. :-)

I’m also hoping that someday TF will become my major income… I like the idea of working from home, when you really are inspired… not from 10am to 18pm

There are many Flashden authors doing nothing but being a FD author. Of course most of their time is probably spent supporting their files, rather than making new files. But from what I know the guys that do it full time, make a pretty good living.

I think the market is much larger for FD at the moment. It took these guys close to two years on the Den to be able to switch over. So I suspect within a year or so, we should be able to see some people here, doing full time TF.

Don’t forget commission! Just because badges say someone has made between $1000 and $5000 doesn’t mean they have taken home that much.

It means they have sold $1000 to $5000 worth of templates and in my case, on 25% commission, $1000 only gives me $250 which equates to £175-ish here in the UK. I charge more than that for a homepage design alone when freelancing!

The good thing about doing this though is that over time, you can make a lot of money from one template and make it while you sleep. If you keep making templates and build a large portfolio, it could earn you a monthly income one day but it’d take a LONG time to get there.

At the moment I do it in my spare time because I enjoy it but hope to do it fulltime someday. Fingers crossed.

Yep, I have some times of the year when I can’t take on freelance work and this passive income comes in handy :)
