Get The Image ‘nuff said.
Just use whatever works best for you, I believe anything that extends the native WordPress functionality is best.

I had this in mind too.
If someone give a nice comparison, pros and cons, advantage and disadvantage, speed etc.,
means its nice. 
If I’m correct, the get-the-image plugin does not resize the images.
Relying on a third party script is never a good idea and if you can avoid it, do so.
That goes mostly for Options framework that is being used even by some biggest authors here, that should know the best. But it also applies to image resizing scripts.
Use native WordPress functions if you have choice.
