Are authors allowed to host giveaways?

Actually guys, you CAN in some cases host a giveaway. I have done it several times, after contacting support to make sure.

What support has told me is that it is usually okay, but that you should always contact support first to get their approval on a case by case basis.

It’s where we run a contest on our own personal site (or somewhere else) and offer the winners a free copy of an item sold here.

Okay, and does the item have to be yours? If it’s not I assume you have to buy a regular license for each copy you give?

That’s exactly what I had in mind as well. I assume the item that you give away is yours, otherwise it doesn’t make much sense I guess I’ll follow your example and contact support as well. Thanks!

I had same question. Even I posted here but it did not receive very well response. Then I contacted support and they said that I am selling the product exclusively here but I still own the copyright of the product so if you wish to use it any other way, you can do it (I used it for my personal purpose). But just make sure you are not selling it.
