Hey folks,

I’m trying to learn the art of the digital painting. I’ve found that, when you’re trying to learn somethings on the internet, It can become frustrating and irritating. So, my question is: How can I start digital painting? I have my Wacom, I have the spirit, but, what are the rules?

Thanks. SDM

There are no “rules”. Do you already know how to paint and draw (using actual paper), or are you starting from scratch? You might also have a look at using Painter instead of Photoshop, since it’s actually geared at, as the name suggests, digital painting.

Photoshop does just as good of a job if not better than any painting program out there. Not to mention if you want to alter things after-the-fact you can with Photoshop.

There aren’t really any rules in digital painting. To improve you just need to keep doing it.

I know how to draw, I don’t know how to paint. Is that a problem?
The problem with changing softwares is that I’m more used to use Photoshop, and when I change softwares, it will become frustrating. I’ll give it a try anyways.

Thanks for the reply Zeplix!

First I thought about combination of scanned hand drawn sketches and some digital artwork combined in photoshop.
Now I am thinking about getting one of these, in particulary:
wacom Intuos4 Large

is this good product?

As Zeplix suggested, idealy you start diggin into Painter, Corel developed that software specifically for complex digital drawings and illustrations and is the ideal software for your needs to start digital painting. Also idealy you have one of the Cintiq family tablets of Wacom.

Thanks Thomas. I’m going to give a try to Painter. And, wow, a Cintiq Tablet is around $1,000 each! That’s a lot of money for a beginner!

Can you recommend me another tablet?

I have this one: http://www.google.com.mx/search?gcx=w&ix=c2&q=wacom+cte-440&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&hl=es&tab=wi&biw=1280&bih=702

Cheers!
