On activeden we also have self-hosted previews, but don’t get accepted when there are images that violate copyrights I think.

And this should be considered for all marketplaces. Believe it or not it also makes the difference

Hi, everyone. I’m the site manager of ThemeForest.

The truth of the matter is that this is a bit of a tricky topic, and one that we’re working to make consistent across all of the marketplaces. In fact, our lawyers are currently finalizing a draft that we’ll be using for each site. Hopefully, that should help to make things a bit more consistent.

I understand that, on ActiveDen, authors are not allowed to use copyrighted images in their self-hosted live previews. At least for now, this is not the case on ThemeForest. Though we do highly encourage authors to use royalty free stock images, they are, as of this point in time, free to use any images they choose in their previews. This is because all of the materials are hosted on their own site, and are not referenced in any way on ThemeForest. This means that any screenshots on ThemeForest must also be void of these copyrighted images.

Please note that, as Envato’s lawyers and Fuad finalize the details, this may change. We’ll keep you all posted. :)

-Jeffrey

I really apreciate user words but i encourage Envato to give here an answer. Not sure if the move to “all marketplaces” section of this post is benefiting this.

Since you have had now had an answer from a ThemeForest reviewer (EDIT: and manager :) ) I would say there is no question that it benefited from the move.

Thanks for the answer JeffreyWay. I don’t get is why on Themeforest they can and we can’t.

I’ll speak for me as an activeden author that I, sometimes find really hard to find very good quality images and specially video to put in my projects that don’t need to be bought. I hope this issue gets resolved because at the moment things are not even between marketplaces.

But thats not the case… there are a few in the latest 40 files on TF where there are both brand names and images within the screenshot for the theme where its very unlikely that they are licensed to…

If you think a theme/template might be in violation you can contact support and give them a heads up. They’ll check it out and take the necessary action to take care of it.

Obviously this is not a solution. There is no reason to start contacting support just for notifiying a template is usign that kind of material. This is not a school war between authors (like: hey, look at the image that guy used!)

As MSFX said, many templates uses external images for previews and even many of the templates are hosted inside envato servers. Sorry Jeffrey, really appreciate your post here, but it didn’t solve anything about the real problem questioned in this post. Why AD authors can’t and others can?

Not speaking officially here but if your hope is that the disparity between Activeden’s and Themeforset’s enforcement of copyright policies will be resolved by Activeden lowering its enforcement standards then I think you might be disappointed.
