My guess is that the author rating is not recalculated when a customer changes an item rating. So for example, if all your customers gave you a 5, and then 3 of them changed their rating later, but the system only applies original ratings toward the author rating, you’d end up with this scenario.

(I think this is what Pricop was suggesting as well)

Author rating seems to be calculated after rounding the individual item’s average. This way it may appear like there is a data loss when you have only 1 item but for a portfolio with more than 1 items, it will be almost equal.

That would also make sense, an official response would be nice regarding this matter.
